YKK or Riri? Both brands are among the most recognisable in the premium segment, but they have a different focus. YKK is a Japanese manufacturer with a very wide range – metal, moulded, nylon coil and invisible zips for all types of clothing and equipment. Riri is a Swiss brand known above all for luxury metal zips with precisely polished teeth, found at fashion houses and in high-end leather goods.
The choice between the two is rarely a question of “better” and “worse”. It depends on the type of product, the price class, the range needed and the customer’s requirements. In many collections the two brands do not even compete directly, because they cover different needs. Below we compare their approach from the point of view of a manufacturer who has to choose, order and repeat the same zip next season too.

Where YKK is the more logical choice
A wide portfolio from one source
If the collection includes jackets, trousers, dresses and backpacks, YKK can cover all the zips – metal for denim, invisible for dresses, moulded for sports jackets and nylon coil for pockets and accessories. This simplifies the specification and colour coordination.
Sports, outdoor and workwear
YKK’s Vislon moulded zips and technical coil zips are the standard in the sports segment. They work in cold and damp conditions and with gloves, and the logo is recognisable to equipment buyers.
Repeat runs in larger quantities
For styles that are sewn season after season and in several factories, YKK’s standardised nomenclature and colour system are a practical advantage.
Where Riri is the more logical choice
- Luxury leather jackets, women’s handbags and small leather accessories, where the zip is jewellery.
- Collections where the brand wants a European origin for its trims.
- Styles in small runs, where the look of the metal is the leading argument.
- An explicit requirement from a fashion house in the tech pack.
YKK Excella versus Riri’s polished metal zip
When the conversation is about a luxury metal zip, the real comparison is between YKK’s premium Excella line and Riri’s polished zips. Both solutions have individually shaped and polished teeth, a smooth chain and high-quality sliders. The differences lie in the details of the shape, in the available finishes and sliders, and in the associations each brand carries in the fashion world. For an upper-mid-range leather jacket, Excella is often perfectly sufficient; for a luxury house, the choice is sometimes dictated by the brand’s tradition. Other comparisons manufacturers look for
- YKK or SBS – SBS is a large Asian brand with a wide range at a more affordable price. The comparison is more “brand standard versus value for money”.
- YKK or Talon – Talon is a historic American brand, known mainly in denim and the retro segment.
- YKK or a standard zip – for products where the zip brand does not matter, a quality standard zip is a sensible choice.
How to choose between premium brands
- Define the role of the zip – a functional detail or a visible accent.
- Check the range – does the brand have all the lines you need for the collection.
- Compare samples – on the actual material, with the actual slider and finish.
- Think about repeat orders – how easily you will get the same item next season.
- Coordinate with the other accessories – buttons, eyelets, buckles and metal labels in the same finish.
- Assess the budget – a premium zip must match the final price of the product.
A practical test before deciding
The surest way to choose between two premium brands is to sew one sample of the product with each zip. Place them side by side in daylight, open and close the zip several dozen times and assess the sound, the effort and the way the zip sits in the seam. Show the samples to retailers or to some of your regular customers. Often the decision is made in a few minutes when the products are in your hands rather than in a catalogue. Record the final choice in the tech pack with the full specification – line, size, finish and slider – so that there is no discrepancy in production.
When you do not need a premium brand
Not every product needs a luxury zip. If the product is mid-range and the zip is hidden or under little load, browse the general range of metal zips and zips – there the slider can also carry your logo, which in many cases is a stronger argument for the brand than someone else’s logo.
