Accessories for Outdoor and Tactical Clothing – MOLLE, Velcro and Buckles

A tactical belt consists of three main components: a strong technical tape (usually 38 mm or 45–50 mm wide), a buckle that opens quickly but won’t unfasten under load, and elements for adjusting and securing equipment. Tactical and outdoor clothing also includes MOLLE tapes, velcro panels for patches, cord stoppers, carabiners and plastic buckles for backpacks. All must withstand weight, mud, cold and repeated use, so their specifications are stricter than those for fashion accessories.

Requirements for tactical and outdoor products

Backpacks for hiking, tactical vests or hunting jackets are used in conditions where accessory failure means lost gear. Therefore, the requirements are:

  • Strength – buckles and rings must bear weight and dynamic loads;
  • Glove-friendly operation – large buckles, stoppers and pullers that are easy to handle;
  • Resistance to water, cold, UV and mud – materials must not rust, become brittle or fade;
  • Silence – metal parts must not rattle in hunting or tactical clothing;
  • Matte finish – no shine; colours like black, olive, coyote and camouflage tones.

Tactical belt: tape and buckle

The tactical belt is worn alone or as a base for holsters, pouches and bags. The most common widths are 38 mm for belts worn through trouser loops and 45–50 mm for external equipment belts.

Plastic snap buckleLightweight, metal-free, opens by side pressLight belts, outdoor, training

The buckle must match the exact width and thickness of the tape. Thick technical tape requires a larger opening; otherwise, the buckle won’t close or the tape gets pinched. Order tape and buckle together and test them as a set.

MOLLE tapes and gear attachment

MOLLE is a modular system for attaching pockets and pouches to vests, backpacks and belts. It consists of horizontal rows of technical tape about 25 mm wide, sewn onto the product at regular intervals. Accessories with similar tapes on the back weave into these rows and stay secure.

For the manufacturer, this means:

  1. durable polyamide or polyester technical tape with consistent width;
  2. precise spacing between rows and stitches;
  3. strong thread and reinforced bartack stitches at the ends;
  4. tape colour matching the base fabric.

Velcro patches and panels

Tactical clothing uses velcro for removable identification patches – unit insignia, flags, names, blood groups. A panel of the soft loop side is sewn onto the garment, while patches have the hook side on the back. This allows patch replacement in seconds. Wider tapes are used for the panel, and the colour must match the fabric. See velcro tapes in various widths and colours.

Cord stoppers and cords

Stoppers adjust hoods, jacket hems, backpacks and pouches. Outdoor products use plastic stoppers made of POM or polyamide – they don’t freeze, rust or rattle. Choose models with large enough buttons for gloved hands. The stopper hole must fit the cord thickness, and cord ends are finished with aglets or knots. See types in cord stoppers.

Plastic buckles for backpacks

Backpacks use a full set of plastic buckles:

  • Snap buckles for chest and waist straps;
  • Three-bar adjusters for strap length;
  • Keepers for loose strap ends;
  • D-rings and frames for attachment to the bag body.

For heavy backpacks, choose more robust buckles and check their behaviour in cold – some plastics become brittle at low temperatures.

Carabiners, rings and hooks

Bottles, keys, gloves and extra pouches are attached to tactical belts, vests and backpacks with carabiners, D-rings and S-hooks. Choose carabiners with screw locks or solid springs for items that must not detach accidentally, and tactical hooks for quick attachment. Rings should be welded or solid, without open seams. See models in carabiners and hooks.

Matte finishes and non-reflective colours

Shiny buckles reveal the wearer’s position and look out of place on olive or coyote clothing. Therefore, metal accessories for tactical products are chosen with matte black or graphite finishes, and plastic parts match the tape colour. All Polkom metal products are nickel free. For camouflage fabrics, select one main tone for all accessories so no element stands out.

How to specify accessories

  1. Tape width and thickness for each position.
  2. Expected load – light belt, backpack, equipment belt.
  3. Environment – cold, water, saltwater, UV exposure.
  4. Colour – Pantone or fabric sample; matte finish.
  5. Requirement for silence or metal absence.
  6. Logo – embossed on buckle, patch, woven label.
  7. Tests – tensile strength, repeated opening, cold resistance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard width for a tactical belt?
The two most common widths are about 38 mm for belts worn through trouser loops and 45–50 mm for external equipment belts that hold holsters and pouches. Buckles and sliders must match the exact width and thickness of the technical tape used.
Plastic or metal buckle for a tactical belt?
Metal quick-release buckles handle heavier loads and are preferred for equipment belts. Plastic snap buckles are lighter, metal-free, and don’t heat or freeze, making them suitable for outdoor and training belts. The choice depends on gear weight and usage conditions.
How to order velcro patches for tactical clothing?
The patch has the hook side of the velcro on the back, and the garment has a sewn panel of the soft loop side matching the fabric colour. Specify patch and panel size, colour and quantity. Patches can be woven or printed, with logo, flag or name, and finished with overlock or laser edge.
