Black wire hooks and eyes are chosen for dark fabrics – black, navy, burgundy, dark green – because they are almost invisible against them. Silver ones are the universal choice for white, light and pastel fabrics, and gold ones for warm tones, champagne, ecru and styles where the metal may remain visible. If no colour matches, the hook can be covered with thread in the colour of the fabric.
Why the colour of the hook matters
A wire hook is a concealed fastener, but it is not always completely invisible. The round eye above an invisible zip peeps out slightly between the edges, with open collars and sheer fabrics the metal shows through, and on evening dresses it is visible with movement. The wrong colour is a small detail that the customer notices immediately, especially a light dress with a dark hook or vice versa.
Black wire hooks and eyes
Black hooks and eyes have a lacquer or powder coating over the metal wire. Their advantages are:
- almost invisible on black and dark fabrics;
- they do not reflect light, so they do not "flash" with movement;
- suitable for formalwear, evening dresses, suit skirts and uniforms;
- they also work well with a dark lining, which is sometimes visible when opening.
The coating must be even and durable, with no chipped areas on the bend. When buying wholesale it is wise to check a sample after fastening it many times – where the hook rubs against the eye, a weak coating wears first.
Silver wire hooks and eyes
Silver hooks usually have a nickel or similar light metal finish. They are the most versatile:
- they suit white, grey, light blue, pink and pastel tones;
- suitable for wedding and bridal dresses in white satin;
- on sheer fabrics light metal shows through less than dark metal;
- they combine easily with invisible zips with a metal slider.
Gold wire hooks and eyes
Gold hooks have a warm yellow tint. They are used with ecru, beige, brown, mustard, champagne and on styles with other gold accessories – buckles, buttons or chains. When the garment's metal hardware is gold, a hook in the same tone underlines the overall style.
Table: hook colour by fabric
| Fabric colour | Recommended hook colour |
|---|---|
| Black, graphite, navy | Black |
| Burgundy, dark green, dark brown | Black |
| White, ivory, grey | Silver |
| Pastel tones | Silver |
| Ecru, beige, champagne | Gold or silver |
| Bright colours – red, fuchsia, royal blue | Black or thread-covered to match |
| Sheer and very light fabrics | Silver, finest size |
Invisible fastening: covering with thread
When the aim is complete invisibility, for example on a bright or light evening dress, the hook and eye are covered with thread in the colour of the fabric. The metal is covered densely with buttonhole stitches, and the result is a fastener that blends into the fabric. Use a strong polyester sewing thread in the exact shade. An alternative on the finest fabrics is a thread loop instead of a metal eye.
Hook colour and zip colour
Above an invisible zip, the hook and the zip are seen together when the garment is opened. The zip is usually in the colour of the fabric, and the hook in a neutral tone. On a dark dress with a dark zip, a black hook is the natural choice. On a light dress with a light zip, choose silver. If the zip slider is gold, consider whether the hook should also be gold.
Finish and wear
The colour of the hook comes from its finish, so its quality matters:
- Evenness – no spots or uncoated areas, especially on the bend.
- Abrasion resistance – the coating must not chip with repeated fastening.
- Wash resistance – after washing the hook must not darken or stain the fabric.
- Skin contact – for lingerie and items worn directly against the body, ask about the material and finish if you have specific requirements.
How to check the colour before ordering
Photos on screen alter the shade, so choosing the colour is safest in person. Place the sample hook on the fabric in daylight and under artificial lighting – especially if the garment is for evening events. Look at it from the distance at which someone facing the wearer would see it. If you are torn between two colours, sew both onto a test piece, fasten them and take a photo with your phone. The colour that "disappears" in the photo is usually the right one.
One colour for the whole collection?
Many manufacturers simplify stock by using black hooks for dark styles and silver for all others. This covers most cases. Gold ones are added only for styles in warm tones or with gold hardware. For a small collection with similar fabrics it is sensible to choose one colour and one size to simplify planning.
Common mistakes
- A silver hook on a black dress – it flashes with every movement.
- A black hook on white chiffon – it shows through as a dark dot.
- Different colours for hook and eye in one set.
- A finish that chips after a few fastenings.
