Coconut buttons are among the most widely used eco-friendly buttons: they are made from coconut shell, which is a by-product of the food industry, and they are biodegradable. For the button to stay truly natural, choose a finish with oil, wax or a thin lacquer rather than thick plastic coatings, and communicate only what you can prove.
What makes a button eco-friendly
There is no single definition of an eco-friendly button, but brands usually look at several things:
- Raw material – renewable, recycled or a by-product, not new plastic from fossil fuels.
- Processing – how much chemistry, energy and water is used.
- Coating – whether the finish changes the natural character of the material.
- End of life – whether the button can biodegrade or be recycled together with the garment.
- Durability – a button that breaks after a few washes is not sustainable, whatever the material.
Coconut buttons as eco-friendly buttons
Coconut shell meets several of these criteria at once. Coconuts are grown for their flesh, water and oil, and the hard shell is left over. Part of it is used for fuel, charcoal or crafts, and another part for buttons. So the raw material does not require separate plantations. The button is hard and durable with proper care, and at the end of the garment's life the natural material breaks down considerably more easily than plastic.
The finish matters
A coconut button can lose part of its advantage if it is covered with a thick layer of plastic paint. For eco collections, prefer:
- a natural sanded or polished look without coating;
- an oil or wax treatment;
- a thin clear lacquer when wash resistance is needed;
- laser engraving instead of ink printing for the logo.
Comparison with other natural materials
| Material | Origin of the raw material | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Coconut shell | by-product of the coconut | thin, flat, characteristic texture |
| Corozo (tagua) | nut of the tagua palm | smooth, takes dye very well, thicker shapes |
| Wood | wood, often offcuts from processing | great variety of shapes and tones |
| Horn and bone | by-products of livestock farming | dense, solid, suitable for coats and jackets |
If coconut is not right for a particular style – for example a heavy coat – natural alternatives are corozo buttons and wooden buttons. Different materials in one collection are perfectly normal, as long as they all fit your concept.
How to communicate correctly
Environmental claims in the EU are under increasingly strict control. Under Directive (EU) 2024/825, generic claims such as "eco-friendly" or "green" without evidence are treated as an unfair commercial practice. For brands this means one thing: write specifically and verifiably.
- Instead of "eco-friendly buttons" without explanation – write "buttons made from natural coconut shell".
- Instead of "100% sustainable shirt" – describe the specific materials: fabric, buttons, threads.
- Do not claim a certificate you do not hold for the specific product.
- Keep documentation – the button specification and information from the manufacturer.
Also pay attention to labelling. Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 governs the labelling of textile fibres, and non-textile parts of animal origin are declared separately. Buttons are usually not included in the percentage composition of the fabric, but their description on the product page must be accurate.
Durability is part of sustainability
The most eco-friendly button is the one that never needs replacing. That is why choosing the right size, profile and finish is as important as the material:
- choose a size that matches the buttonhole and the fabric;
- prefer buttons with well-rounded holes that do not cut the thread;
- sew on with quality thread and a thread shank for thick fabrics;
- give clear care instructions on the label;
- add a spare button to the garment.
What to ask the manufacturer for
- the exact name of the material and the type of finish;
- information on whether the button is dyed and with which coating;
- an approved physical sample that becomes the reference for future deliveries;
- the results of your own washing and ironing tests on the sample;
- written confirmation if documents or certificates are used for the specific article.
You need this information not only for marketing but also for the style's technical file. When the collection is repeated after a season or a year, it makes it easy to order the same button, without deviations in material or look.
Packaging and ordering
Eco brands often also ask about delivery. Discuss with the manufacturer the option of packing in paper bags or cartons instead of individual plastic bags, and of consolidating deliveries to reduce transport. This is not part of the button, but it is part of the collection's overall footprint.
The natural look as design
Differences in tone and pattern in coconut buttons are not a defect but proof of their natural origin. Many brands explain this to their customers in the product description: "The buttons are made from natural coconut shell and each one is unique." In this way the variation becomes an advantage rather than a reason for complaints.
