No. 3 or No. 5 Zipper – Which Size for Mattresses?
The zipper number indicates the approximate width of the closed coil in millimetres. For mattresses and bedding, two sizes are used:
- No. 3 – lightweight, flexible zipper for protectors, mattress toppers, pillow covers and thin jersey covers.
- No. 5 – the most common mattress zipper: stronger coil and more robust slider for covers that fit over dense foam or spring mattresses, and for long zippers around the full perimeter.

Separating or Closed-End Mattress Zipper
Closed-end zippers are sealed at both ends. They run around three or four sides of the cover, with the top opening like a lid – this is the classic solution for mattress covers. Separating zippers come apart completely, so the top panel can be fully removed. This is convenient for washing large covers, for two-piece covers, and for mattresses sewn in two stages. For separating mattress zippers, No. 5 is most often chosen – for example, 6 metres in beige for a double mattress.
Zipper Length by Mattress Size
The table below shows typical lengths for the most common mattress sizes. For zippers on three sides, add the two long and one short side; for four sides, use the full perimeter. Lengths are rounded up to the next metre to allow for corners.

Example: for a 160 × 200 cm mattress, a zipper on four sides is 2 × (160 + 200) = 720 cm, so you choose an 8 m zipper. The exact length depends on the cover pattern and the height of the side panel. Sliders: One or Two
- One slider – for zippers on three sides and for smaller covers.
- Two sliders meeting in the middle – the cover opens from the convenient side, without the slider travelling around the entire mattress; we recommend this for zippers from 6 m upwards.
- Locking slider or removable puller – for children's mattresses, hotels and public spaces where the cover should stay closed.
