Metal Zip for Jeans – Which Size, Slider and Length to Choose

Jeans use a No. 4 or No. 5 metal zip, closed-end and always with an auto-lock slider. The length is determined by the rise and the size of the style – most often between 10 and 20 cm. The metal and the finish are chosen to match the button and the rivets and to withstand industrial washing.

Which metal zip for jeans to choose

Jeans are among the most heavily stressed garments: the zip is opened and closed several times a day, is under tension when sitting and goes through dozens of wash cycles, often already at the factory (stone wash, enzyme wash, bleaching). That is why, when choosing a metal zip for jeans, not only the look matters, but also the construction of every element – teeth, tape, slider and stops.

Zip size: No. 4 or No. 5

The zip number roughly corresponds to the width of the closed teeth in millimetres. Two main sizes are used for jeans:

  • No. 4 – more delicate, suitable for women’s jeans, thin and stretch denim, children’s styles and chino-type trousers.
  • No. 5 – the classic choice for men’s jeans, workwear and heavyweight denim. The teeth are more substantial and visually more pronounced.

For very heavy or raw denim, some brands choose an even larger size, but this is an exception – a chunkier zip makes the fly stiffer and more visible.

Why an auto-lock slider is a must

The most common complaint about jeans is a zip that “falls down” by itself during wear. The cause is almost always a slider without a lock or with a worn mechanism. An auto-lock slider has a small pin that engages between the teeth when the puller is lowered. This way the zip stays closed until the puller is lifted.

  • Auto-lock (pin lock) – the standard for jeans and trousers.
  • Semi-auto lock – locks more lightly, used on bags and jackets, but not recommended for a fly.
  • Non-lock – unsuitable for jeans.

The slider puller is also where the brand can put its logo – embossed, engraved or in a distinctive shape.

Jeans zip length

The length is measured from the top to the bottom stop (the toothed part only, without the tape above and below). As a guide:

  • low-rise women’s jeans – shorter zips, about 10–13 cm;
  • high-rise women’s jeans – 15–18 cm and more;
  • men’s jeans – most often 15–20 cm, depending on the size.

In serial production, it is good to vary the length across the size range (for example two or three different zip lengths for the whole run) rather than using one length for all sizes. This way the fly opens sufficiently on the larger sizes without the zip being too long on the smaller ones.

Material and finish compatible with washing

Jeans most often use brass teeth – natural or with an antique brass, bronze, silver or black nickel colour finish. The zip finish should be in the same range as the metal buttons and rivets so that the hardware looks like a set. All Polkom metal finishes are nickel free.

There is an important practical point here: industrial washing with pumice, enzymes or bleaching agents can change the colour of the finish and leave marks on the fabric around the zip. Before a production order, always test a sample of the zip with your wash recipe. If the process includes aggressive bleaching, discuss a more resistant finish or a different metal with the manufacturer.

Tape and colour

The tape of a jeans zip is usually navy, black, grey or natural, chosen to match the denim. For garment dyeing, the tape must be made of a material that takes the dye – specify this in advance.

Stops and sewing details

The top stops of a jeans zip are metal clips that stop the slider at the top end, and the bottom stop closes the chain. When sewing the fly, it is important that the needle and machine do not pass through the teeth and stops themselves – this breaks the needle and deforms the metal elements. That is why enough tape is left above and below the teeth in the cutting, and the excess at the top is secured under the waistband.

  • Check that the bottom stop is at the correct height relative to the fly bartack.
  • Use a zip foot and a denim needle of a suitable size.
  • After washing, check the slider movement – with stiff denim, light lubrication is sometimes needed.

Common mistakes when choosing

  1. A plastic or nylon coil zip in a jeans fly – it looks cheap and wears quickly.
  2. A slider without a lock – the zip opens during wear.
  3. One length for the entire size range.
  4. A finish that has not been tested with the wash recipe.
  5. A metal colour that does not match the button and rivets.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which zip is used on jeans?
Jeans use a closed-end metal zip, most often with brass teeth, size No. 4 or No. 5, with an auto-lock slider. The metal chain withstands the tension in the fly and repeated washing, and the locking slider prevents the zip from opening by itself during wear. Plastic and nylon coil zips are not recommended for a jeans fly.
Why does the zip on jeans slide down by itself?
Most often the slider has no auto-lock or its mechanism is worn and the pin no longer engages between the teeth. Sometimes the cause is a loosened slider that no longer presses the two sides together properly. In new production, the solution is an auto-lock slider; on a finished garment, the slider can be replaced with one suitable for the same chain size.
Can I use the same zip for all jeans sizes?
It is technically possible but not recommended. On small sizes, a zip that is too long extends below the crotch and makes sewing difficult, while on large sizes a short zip limits the opening. The usual practice is two or three lengths for the whole size range, matched to the rise of the style. Send us the size chart and we will suggest suitable lengths.
