Thermotransfer printing for labels is a method where a heated print head melts ink from a thin ribbon (foil) and transfers it onto a textile tape. It requires no clichés or screens, making it ideal for small to medium runs and labels with variable data – sizes, article numbers, batches, and barcodes. With the right ribbon and tape choice, the print withstands multiple washes.
How Thermotransfer Printing for Labels Works
The machine feeds two tapes simultaneously: the textile base and the ribbon. The print head consists of a row of microscopic heaters. Each heater activates for a fraction of a second where a dot of the image is needed. At those points, the ink from the ribbon melts and bonds to the textile. The image forms dot by dot, similar to an office printer, with a resolution usually at 300 or 600 dpi.
Since the design comes directly from a file, each subsequent label can be different. This is the main advantage over flexo and screen printing, which require a new form for each change.
Types of Ribbons
| Ribbon | Durability | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Wax | Low, wears off | Paper labels, cartons – not for garments |
| Wax/Resin | Medium | Synthetic labels without intensive washing |
| Resin (textile) | High, washable | Satin, taffeta, polyester – clothing labels |
Special textile ribbons are used for clothing labels. They are formulated to penetrate the surface of synthetic tape and resist detergents and mechanical abrasion in washing machines.
Tapes Suitable for Thermotransfer
The best results are achieved on smooth synthetic tapes with a coating designed for printing:
- Nylon taffeta – smooth surface, sharp print, classic for composition labels.
- Polyester satin – softer with a sheen, good for visible size or logo labels.
- Polyester tape with coating – excellent ink absorption and high durability.
Cotton tape has a rougher texture and produces less sharp prints, so screen or flexo printing is more common for it.
Advantages and Limitations
Advantages
- No cliché costs – suitable for many variants in small quantities.
- Quick content changes – size, batch, or article without stopping production.
- High resolution – clear barcodes, small washing symbols, and multilingual text.
- Sequential numbering of labels is possible.
Limitations
- Usually one colour per pass.
- White or light print on dark tape is limited compared to screen printing.
- For very large runs with the same design, flexo printing becomes more economical.
Common Issues and Solutions
Most complaints about thermotransfer labels have clear causes and can be resolved at the sample stage.
- Print wears off after washing – usually due to using an unsuitable ribbon or tape without print coating. The solution is a textile resin ribbon and compatible base.
- Blurred or broken letters – font too small or thin for the print head resolution. Increase letter height or choose a bolder font.
- Barcode unreadable – missing quiet zone around the code, lines too narrow, or code printed across the tape feed direction.
- Tape curling – excessive print temperature or tape not heat-resistant. The manufacturer adjusts machine settings.
- Uneven contrast – dark tape with dark ribbon. For readability, choose a light tape with black or dark blue print.
Why Thermotransfer Is Convenient for Production
The biggest benefit for the sewing workshop is predictability. When size and batch labels are printed according to actual cutting, there are no leftover sizes that didn’t sell. For additional orders of one model, only the needed quantity is printed without making a new form. This also facilitates traceability: the batch number on the label matches production documents, and in case of a complaint, the product’s series is quickly identified.
For brands with online sales, it is also useful that a barcode or internal code matching the warehouse system can be added to the label. Thus, the label works not only for the customer but also for logistics.
Thermotransfer or Other Methods
The choice usually depends on quantity and number of variants. If you have a collection of twenty models in six sizes, thermotransfer saves making dozens of forms. If you have one label in hundreds of thousands of pieces, flexo printing offers a lower unit price. If you want rich colour on a black tape, consider screen printing.
Thermotransfer is also the standard for care and composition labels – where text is long, often multilingual, and composition varies between items.
How to Prepare Print Data
- Send the main design as a vector file with fonts converted to curves.
- Prepare a table with variable fields – size, article, batch, barcode – and quantity per row.
- Specify tape width, final label size, and cutting/folding method.
- Describe washing and drying conditions of the finished garment.
Minimum text height must match print resolution. Very thin lines under half a point may be lost. For barcodes, provide quiet zones on both sides for reliable scanning.
