YKK Excella or Metal – the choice depends on whether the zip is a visible design element or just a functional detail. YKK Metal is the standard metal line for denim, jackets and workwear, while Excella is the premium version with polished teeth for luxury garments, leather and bags. Both are original YKK; the difference lies in the finishing, the look and the cost.

YKK Metal – the workhorse
The standard line is what most people associate with YKK: teeth of brass, aluminium or other alloys, a strong tape and a large choice of sliders. It is designed for products that are opened and closed daily and washed often.
- Denim – the fly zip with an auto-lock slider.
- Jackets and coats – open-end zips in medium and large sizes.
- Workwear – where strength matters more than looks.
- Textile backpacks and bags – with larger chain sizes.
The advantage of original YKK Metal over unspecified zips is consistency – the same geometry and movement in every batch, which reduces defects in series production.
YKK Excella – when the zip is jewellery
Excella is used where the buyer looks at and touches the zip. The polished teeth form a smooth chain, and the sliders and pullers are more refined. It is the choice for leather jackets, women’s handbags, wallets, boots and luxury trousers. You will find more details in the YKK metal zips category.
How to choose a line – five questions
- Is the zip visible? If it is under a fly placket or lining – Metal. If it is on the face side – consider Excella.
- What is the retail price of the product? The trims must match the positioning.
- How often is the zip used? Both lines are strong, but on bags and wallets the smoothness of Excella is felt every day.
- What is the material? On leather, Excella emphasises quality; on denim and heavy cotton, Metal looks more authentic.
- What are the other metal accessories? The zip finish must match the buttons, rivets and buckles.
Practical examples
Jeans and denim jackets
Almost always YKK Metal in brass or antique brass. Excella would not be noticed under the fly placket here and would only make the product more expensive.
Leather jacket
If the jacket is mid-market, Metal in a nickel or black nickel colour (nickel free) is a good choice. For a designer jacket where the zip is a statement, Excella is justified.
Women’s handbag
For genuine leather bags, Excella is preferred, especially with a decorative puller. For textile bags and backpacks, Metal is perfectly suitable.
A collection with two price levels
Some brands use Excella in their main line and Metal in the more affordable one. This way the visual language stays consistent while costs are controlled.
Common mistakes when choosing between the two lines
- Excella under a placket. The zip is expensive, but nobody sees it – a typical case of budget spent without effect.
- Metal on a luxury bag. The bag is made of expensive leather, but the zip looks like one on a backpack. The buyer senses the mismatch even without being able to name it.
- Different finishes in one collection. If some styles use Metal and others Excella, at least the tone of the finish should be the same.
- Deciding without a sample. The difference between the two lines is best seen on the actual material, not in a catalogue or a photo.
- Overlooking the slider. Choosing a line does not replace choosing the right slider – auto-lock, non-locking or two-way.
Differences in handling and complaints
From a production point of view, both lines are sewn in the same way and do not require different machines or settings. The difference is in visual inspection: with Excella, any scratch on the polished teeth is more noticeable, so it is good to protect the zip during ironing and pressing and to pack finished products so that the metal does not rub against other components. With Metal, the tolerance for minor processing marks is greater, especially with antique and matte finishes.
Cost factors
For both lines, the cost is determined by the chain size, length, material and finish, slider type, open-end or closed-end, tape colour and quantity. The difference between Metal and Excella comes from the additional finishing of the teeth. For a specific comparison, ask for a quote for both lines with the same specification.
If you do not need the YKK brand
When the zip brand is not a customer requirement, browse Polkom’s standard metal zips, which can be ordered with a logo slider. All lines of the Japanese manufacturer are collected in YKK zips.
