More about MB-16

"Shell" (MB-16) is a metal shank button available in 3 sizes – from 15 mm to 30 mm, in four coating colours. Polkom has been making buttons for over 30 years, and "Shell" (MB-16) is part of our collection of metal shank buttons. Of the MB-16 sizes, the smallest – 15 mm – suits sleeves, shirts and blouses, while the largest – 30 mm – is for coats and women's jackets.

Design and details

"Shell" has a seashell relief – a motif with a nautical feel, in three sizes from dresses to coats. The coating is even and hard-wearing, and the relief catches the light and emphasises the shape of the design.

Colour and pairing

Colours of "Shell" (MB-16):

  • Nickel is a cool silver tone – suitable for grey suits, black coats and denim.
  • Gold – the classic on navy blazers and black or camel coats.
  • Gun metal is dark grey with a metallic sheen – suitable when you want a metal button without a strong shine.
  • Shiny black combines the shape of a metal button with the colour of black fabric – almost tone on tone on black.

Gun metal is a compromise between the shine of metal and the discretion of dark tones – a good fit for business and casual wear. In gold the button adds warmth and a festive touch – suitable for burgundy, camel, beige and black fabrics. The colour of a metal button is most convincing when it echoes the other metal accessories on the garment or bag.

Choosing the size

This model is intended for women's jackets, dresses, knitwear and children's clothing (15 mm – dresses and blouses, 25–30 mm – jackets and coats).

  • 15 mm – sleeves, shirts and blouses
  • 25 mm – coats and women's jackets
  • 30 mm – coats and women's jackets

Sewing on and buttonholes

The shank underneath holds the button above the fabric and hides the stitching on the face side. Buttonhole – as a guide: 15 mm – approx. 18–20 mm; 25 mm – approx. 28–30 mm; 30 mm – approx. 33–35 mm. Always make a test on the actual fabric.

Frequently asked questions

Can the garment be washed with the metal buttons on?
The garment can be washed with the buttons on, but when ironing go around them or iron through a cloth, as the metal heats up. Do not clean the coating with abrasive products.

Is the relief the same in all four colours?
The "Shell" model is identical in all colours – only the coating differs: nickel, gold, gun metal and shiny black.

Which colour of "Shell" should I choose?
Choose nickel for cool and neutral tones, gold for navy, black and warm fabrics, gun metal for menswear and casual wear, and shiny black for evening and formal garments.
