A custom metal perfume cap goes through several clear stages: a brief with the bottle and the brand’s idea, the choice of shape and material, metal colour and finish, the type of logo, a sample on the real bottle and serial production after approval. The more complete the information at the start, the fewer corrections are needed along the way and the faster the cap reaches production.
Stage 1: brief – what to prepare
A good brief saves weeks of correspondence. It does not have to be technically perfect, but it should answer a few questions:
- The bottle – a sample with the pump fitted or a drawing with the dimensions of the neck and pump.
- The idea – a sketch, reference photos, a 3D model or a description in words.
- The positioning – mass-market product, premium, niche fragrance, limited edition.
- The colour – the desired metal colour and type of surface.
- The logo – a vector file and where it should be placed.
- The line – one fragrance or several, one volume or several.
If the bottle is still being developed, share this from the very beginning. Then the cap and bottle can be designed in parallel, and the dimensions of the neck and pump can be fixed to suit the desired cap shape. This is much easier than correcting a bottle that has already been ordered.
Stage 2: shape and material
The shape
The shape of a metal cap can be a classic cylinder, cube, sphere, bevelled or asymmetric body, with ribbing, facets, spiral lines or decorative rings. Polkom makes metal perfume caps in any size and shape, including fully bespoke ones – to your drawing or sample. This is also when the proportions relative to the bottle and the position of the logo are specified.
Zinc alloy or aluminium
The two most widely used metals for perfume caps have a different character:
| Criterion | Zinc alloy | Aluminium |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Casting in a mould | Machining of a blank or deep drawing |
| Weight | Heavy, noticeable in the hand | Light |
| Suitable shapes | Complex relief, facets, sculptural shapes | Clean cylinders and simple geometric shapes |
| Logo | Cast raised or debossed logo, engraving, enamel | Engraving, printing |
| Typical effect | Jewellery-like, luxurious | Minimalist, technical |
If the cap has complex relief or a logo cast into the metal, zinc alloy is usually chosen. If the priority is lightness and a clean silhouette, aluminium is the logical choice.
The insert
An insert is placed inside the metal cap to ensure the fit on the pump. It is designed together with the outer body: the metal provides the look and weight, the insert a stable and quiet closure.
Stage 3: metal colour and finish
Metal caps are made in any metal colour: gold, light gold, matte gold, rose gold, silver, nickel colour, black nickel colour, gunmetal, black, antique brass and antique silver. The surface can be:
- gloss – a mirror shine that emphasises the shape;
- matte – soft, modern, shows fingerprints less;
- satin – a fine silky sheen;
- brushed – visible parallel lines, a technical and masculine character;
- antique – darkened recesses and lightened edges that emphasise the relief.
Finishes can be combined on one cap – for example a matte body and a gloss logo. All Polkom metal products are nickel free; “nickel” and “black nickel” are only colour names. You can see the full palette on the Colours and finishes page.
Stage 4: the logo
The logo turns a standard shape into a cap for your brand. We offer every kind of logo:
- engraving – suitable for thin lines and lettering on the top or side;
- raised logo – embossed, cast together with the cap;
- debossed logo – discreet and elegant;
- enamel – colour filling of the logo or monogram;
- printing – for multicoloured graphics;
- combination – for example a raised monogram with enamel.
Send the logo in vector format. Very fine lines and small letters are assessed against the size of the cap and the chosen technique – sometimes it is better to simplify the logo for metal than to lose the details.
Stage 5: sample and approval
The sample is the moment the idea becomes an object. It is checked on the real bottle with the pump fitted. What to assess:
- fit – the cap goes on tightly, does not rotate and does not press the actuator;
- weight and balance of the bottle;
- colour and sheen under daylight and artificial light;
- legibility of the logo and quality of the edges;
- compatibility with the box and its insert.
If necessary, the sample is corrected. The approved sample becomes the reference for the whole run.
Stage 6: serial production and inspection
In the run, the most important things are consistent colour and finish, precise dimensions and a clear logo on every piece. The finished caps are packed so that the finish is not scratched during transport. For repeat orders, the approved sample remains the reference, so the new batch matches the previous one in colour and detail – important when bottles from different deliveries stand side by side in the shops. Minimum quantities depend on the shape and technique – send an inquiry to receive a specific quote.
What affects the price of a metal cap
The price cannot be determined without a specific project, but the factors are clear. If you want to optimise the budget, work with them at the design stage:
- the complexity of the shape – facets, undercuts and thin walls require a more complex casting mould;
- the material and size – a larger and heavier cap uses more metal;
- the number of finishes – a combination of matte and gloss or an antique effect adds operations;
- the logo technique – multicolour enamel is more labour-intensive than engraving;
- new mould or adaptation – an entirely new model requires tooling;
- the quantity – with larger runs, the set-up costs are spread over more pieces.
For an exact quote, send an inquiry with the bottle, the idea and the desired quantity.
A consistent style: cap, label and box
A metal cap looks strongest when it is part of an overall look. You can add a metal perfume label in the same colour and finish, as well as a box with a logo. If you are looking for colour rather than metal, also see the polyester caps.
