Herringbone tape with logo is a woven twill tape printed along its length with a repeating logo, brand name or text. It is used for hanging loops, inner seam bindings, apron ties, tote bag handles and packaging. The logo is applied by printing, most often screen printing or heat transfer, and the tape can be dyed in a Pantone colour.
Where herringbone tape with logo is used
- Hanging loops on jackets, coats and towels – small but visible branding, seen every time the item is hung up.
- Inner seam bindings – open the jacket and you see the brand name along the seams. A typical detail in the premium segment.
- Neck tape – covers the back neck seam and carries the logo.
- Apron ties and neck straps – for restaurants, cafés and shops.
- Textile bag handles – promotional and gift bags with branded handles.
- Packaging – tying boxes, samples and products, marking collections.
Printing methods
| Method | How it looks | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Screen printing | Dense, slightly raised ink layer, few colours | Simple logos, contrasting text, large runs |
| Heat transfer | Sharp details, fine lines, more colours possible | Complex logos, small fonts |
| Sublimation | Ink penetrates the fibre, no relief | Light polyester tapes, full-colour designs |
The choice depends on the tape material, the complexity of the logo and the quantity. The twill weave has a slight diagonal texture, so very fine lines and small fonts may look less sharp than on a smooth satin ribbon. If the logo has details under a millimetre, discuss them in advance.
How to prepare the logo
- Vector file. Send the logo as AI, EPS, PDF or SVG. A low-resolution raster image gives blurred edges.
- Logo height. It is limited by the tape width minus a margin on both sides. On a 20 mm tape the visible print height is about 12–14 mm.
- Repeat. Define the distance between two logos. For a hanging loop, each cut piece must have at least one complete logo. For a binding – an even repeat.
- Colours. Give Pantone codes for the tape and the ink.
- Position. If the tape will be folded (binding, loop), the logo must be visible after folding – think about where the fold will fall.
Hanging loop tape with text
For a hanging loop, the tape is usually 8–15 mm and folded into a loop. This means only part of the cut piece is visible. For the logo to show, it must be placed in the middle of the piece or repeat often enough that at least one complete logo remains with every cut. In production this is solved with cutting marks or with tape pre-cut at a set pitch.
Printing on cotton and polyester tape
Cotton tape has a matt surface and a natural look, but it absorbs ink more, so the print is softer and slightly matt. Polyester tape is smoother, allows sharper details and is better suited to sublimation. With cotton, also allow for possible shrinkage after washing: if the tape shrinks, the logo will shorten slightly too. Compare materials and widths in the herringbone tape category.
Wash resistance
If the tape is part of a garment, the print must withstand washing and ironing under the same conditions as the product. Before a production run:
- wash a sample at the temperature on the care label;
- check that the print does not peel, fade or stain the fabric;
- iron the sample and check that the iron does not soften the ink;
- for workwear, test industrial laundering.
Logo tape or a woven or printed label
Logo herringbone tape does not replace the size and composition label – that is mandatory under EU textile labelling requirements. The tape is an additional brand element. If you are looking for a label with printed text, see printed labels. If you want a more refined ribbon for a visible logo trim, compare the different types in the ribbons section.
Branded tape for bags
On promotional and gift bags, a branded handle is an effective way to keep the logo visible even when the bag is turned around or folded. A wider tape, 25–40 mm, is used, and the logo repeats at regular intervals so it is visible when carried by hand. The tape colour is often chosen to contrast with the bag colour.
Common mistakes with branded tape
- A font too fine for the twill texture – the letters merge and the text cannot be read.
- A logo that falls in the fold of the loop or binding and is only half visible.
- Low contrast between tape and ink – from a distance the logo disappears.
- No wash test – the print peels after the customer's first few washes.
Ordering steps
- Send the logo, desired width, material and application.
- Specify the tape and print colours in Pantone.
- Approve a digital mock-up with position and repeat.
- Test a sample on the product.
- Start the production run.
Combining with other trims
Branded tape looks best when it is coordinated with the other details – labels, buttons, zips and pullers. Choose the tape and ink colours to echo the brand palette.
