Grosgrain ribbon for hats is used in two ways: as an outer decorative band around the crown and as an inner band around the head, which absorbs sweat and sets the size. For the outer band of a fedora or boater, 25–50 mm is most often chosen, for summer hats 10–16 mm, and the inner band is usually around 25–32 mm.
Why grosgrain ribbon for hats
The matte ribbed texture of grosgrain has been a classic detail in millinery for decades. The ribbon is dense enough to sit snugly around the crown, keeps the knot and bow in shape and does not shine like satin. It also goes well with felt, straw, cotton, wool and tweed, and its colour can contrast with the hat or be tone-on-tone.
Outer crown band
Width by style
| Hat style | Ribbon width | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fedora, trilby | 25–38 mm | a wider ribbon for a taller crown |
| Wide-brim fedora | 38–50 mm | balances the wide brim |
| Boater (straw) | 25–38 mm | often contrasting stripes |
| Panama and summer hats | 10–25 mm | a lighter, more delicate look |
| Cap, baseball cap | 10–16 mm | decorative band above the peak or adjuster |
| Women's hats and fascinators | 10–50 mm | according to the design, often with a bow |
Length
Measure the circumference of the crown exactly where the band will sit and add an allowance for the overlap and knot. For a simple overlap under a decorative bow, a few centimetres are enough; for a classic flat side bow, add more length for the bow itself. In series production, make one hat with a trial band and record the exact length in the technical sheet.
Attachment
- By hand with a few hidden stitches – the traditional method for felt hats; the band can be replaced.
- Machine sewing – for textile hats, caps and mass production.
- Gluing – only for cheap decorative items; with heat and moisture the glue can give way.
Grosgrain ribbon for hats – the inner sweatband
The inner band runs along the edge of the head opening. It protects the material from sweat and grease, sets the size and makes the hat more comfortable. Petersham is used most often, because it is easily shaped with steam and follows the conical shape of the head, but dense grosgrain is also used for caps and textile hats with a straight, low band.
When choosing, consider:
- Material – cotton and viscose absorb better, polyester is more resistant to washing;
- Colour – dark colours hide signs of wear;
- Width – around 25–32 mm covers the seam and leaves room for a size label;
- Branding – a woven label is often sewn onto the inner band or a logo is printed on it.
Colour and style
The classic combination is a band in a darker tone than the hat – for example a black band on a grey fedora or dark brown on beige. Contrasting bands (white and blue, red and navy) are typical of summer and nautical styles. Two-colour and striped grosgrain ribbons are also popular on boaters and sports hats. If the collection has corporate colours, the ribbon can be dyed to Pantone.
Branding hats with grosgrain ribbon
The band is a natural place for the brand. The options are:
- a logo printed around the whole circumference of the outer band;
- a small metal logo plate or a decorative ribbon with a logo attached on top of the main band;
- a print or woven label on the inner band;
- a distinctive knot with an end cut and sealed in a specific shape.
How to sew on an outer band step by step
- Iron the ribbon at a low temperature if it is creased from the roll.
- Wrap it around the crown and mark the overlap point – usually on the left side of the hat.
- Heat-seal the ends (for polyester) or fold them inwards.
- Attach the band with a few hidden stitches along the top and bottom edges, without stretching it.
- Make the knot or bow separately and sew it over the overlap.
Common mistakes
- A band narrower than necessary – it looks like a thin line on a tall crown.
- A stretched band – under strain it leaves creases in the felt.
- A band that is too soft – the knot droops and loses its shape.
- An inner band without a shrinkage test – after the first sweat the hat becomes tighter.
Care
Felt and straw hats are usually not washed, so the band mainly needs to be colourfast to sweat. Textile hats and caps are washed, and then the band must withstand the same temperature as the main fabric. If in doubt, test with a damp white cloth – if it stains, the ribbon is not suitable for an inner band.
Band with a bow or knot – the classic options
The outer band is rarely just a ring around the crown. There are three common arrangements. The flat side bow is the standard on fedoras: a small, tightly folded loop with two short tails, fixed on the left. Here the ribbon must be stiff enough to hold the fold without crushing. A simple knot is typical of summer and sports hats and requires a softer ribbon that ties easily. The third option is a plain band whose ends overlap and are hidden under a decorative ring, a metal logo plate or feathers.
In series production, the bows are often prepared in advance – folded, stitched and sealed – and sewn on as a finished component. This speeds up the work and ensures that all hats in the batch look the same. If you are planning such a process, mention it in your inquiry so that we can choose a ribbon with the right stiffness and width.
