Labels for Home Textiles – Bed Linen, Towels, Tablecloths and Curtains

Labels for home textiles follow the same basic rules as clothing labels: every item must carry a durable fibre composition statement in the language of the market (Bulgarian for products sold in Bulgaria), while the brand, size and care symbols are added for the buyer’s convenience. The difference lies in the position and form – the label is sewn into a corner, into the hem or as a loop, and it must withstand very frequent washing at higher temperatures. Here are the practical solutions for each type of item.

Home textile labels: what they must contain

Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 applies to all textile products made available on the market, including bed linen, towels, tablecloths, curtains and drapes. The main content of the label is:

  • Fibre composition with percentages, for example “100% cotton” or “50% linen, 50% cotton”.
  • Language – Bulgarian for items sold in Bulgaria, and the official language of each market where you sell.
  • Manufacturer or importer details and a contact, in line with general product safety rules.
  • Identifier – style, item or batch.
  • Care symbols according to ISO 3758 – not explicitly mandatory under the regulation, but especially important because home textiles are washed often.
  • Size – for sheets, duvet covers and tablecloths it is practical to put it on the label, because the item is hard to measure once unpacked.

When an item has parts with different compositions – for example a cushion cover and its filling – the composition is stated by part. You will find details on the content of the composition label under care and composition labels.

Wash resistance

Bed linen and towels are washed at 40–60 °C, sometimes higher, are often tumble-dried and ironed. The label must withstand this for as long as the item itself. Therefore:

  • choose polyester taffeta or satin for the composition label – they stay legible;
  • use inks designed for textiles and high temperatures;
  • for woven brand labels, choose polyester damask, which does not fade;
  • test the sample with several washes at the maximum temperature on the label.

The brand label on home textiles

On home textiles the brand label is often small and discreet, because the item is seen from all sides. Popular solutions are:

  1. Woven flag label in the hem of a towel or tablecloth – visible but unobtrusive.
  2. Logo loop – on towels and tea towels it also serves for hanging.
  3. Brand label in the cover seam – on decorative cushions and duvet covers.
  4. Leather or textile label – on blankets, knitted throws and plaids, sewn on the outside in the corner.

Woven labels are particularly suitable here – see the options under woven labels.

The loop as a label

Towels, tea towels and aprons often have a hanging loop. If it is made as a woven logo label, it performs two functions at once. Choose a sturdier tape and enough length to hang it on a hook. The loop is caught in the hem along with the seam, and the composition label can be placed next to it.

Hotel and professional textiles

Bed linen and towels for hotels, hospitals and restaurants are washed in industrial machines – more often, at higher temperatures and with stronger detergents. Here the label must be extremely durable, and owner details or a tracking number are often added. State the professional use in your inquiry so that the material and ink can be chosen for such conditions.

Hang tags and packaging

Home textiles are often sold in packaging – a box, bag or band. There is room there for more information: size, set contents, brand story, care. The cardboard hang tag or the packaging band does not replace the composition label, because they are thrown away, but they complement the presentation. If you sell a set – for example a duvet cover, sheet and pillowcases – each item in the set must carry its own information.

Common mistakes

  • The composition is only on the packaging, and there is no label on the item.
  • The label is made of a material that fades after a few washes at 60 °C.
  • The sheet size is missing – the buyer cannot check it after unpacking.
  • The label is sewn in a visible place on the tablecloth or curtain and spoils the look.
  • The filling composition is not stated on cushions and duvets.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a composition label mandatory on bed linen?
Yes. Bed linen is a textile product and falls within the scope of Regulation 1007/2011. The fibre composition must be stated durably, in the language of the market – for example Bulgarian for the Bulgarian market. The label is sewn onto the item itself, not just onto the packaging, because the packaging is thrown away after purchase.
Where is the label sewn on a towel?
Usually in the hem of one of the short sides – as a flag label or as a hanging loop. The composition label is placed next to it, caught in the same hem. This way the label is easy to find, does not get in the way during use and is not visible when the towel is folded on a shelf.
Which label material withstands washing at 60 degrees?
Polyester taffeta and satin with a suitable textile ink, as well as woven labels in polyester damask, are suitable for frequent washing at higher temperatures. Non-woven materials are less durable. Always test a sample at the maximum temperature in the care symbols and check that the text remains legible.
