Horn Buttons for Suits and Jackets – Count, Size and Placement Guide

The classic set of horn buttons for a suit includes 32L (about 20 mm) buttons for the jacket front, 24L (about 15 mm) for the sleeves and inner pocket, and 24L–26L for the vest if present. A single-breasted jacket typically has one, two, or three front buttons, with three or four on each sleeve. Horn buttons are selected to match the fabric tone or one shade darker, polished for formal suits and matte for more casual styles.

Why horn is the classic choice for suits

Natural buffalo horn is the material traditionally associated with men's tailoring. It is dense, pleasantly cool to the touch, with a deep natural grain, and has enough weight to lie flat on the jacket front. Unlike plastic, horn does not look “new” – it blends naturally with wool, cashmere, flannel, and tweed. That is why in the premium segment, horn buttons are the preferred choice for jackets and suits.

How many buttons does a suit need?

Double-breasted jacket 6×26 front (+1 inner)32L–34L

Vest5–624L–26L
Trousers (belt, back pockets, braces)2–820L–24L

1L = 0.635 mm. When ordering horn buttons for a suit production run, calculate quantities by size and add spare buttons, usually attached to the label or in a separate bag.

Size according to style and cut

Size is not only a technical parameter. For wider lapels and looser cuts, a larger 34L button looks proportional. For slim, modern jackets with narrow lapels, 30L–32L is preferred. For double-breasted jackets, where buttons are arranged in two columns, the size is usually the same or one size larger than the single-breasted model.

Sleeve buttons

Sleeve buttons are what connoisseurs use to judge a jacket. In ready-to-wear, they are usually decorative and sewn onto a closed vent. In higher-end and bespoke models, the vent is functional with working buttonholes. Buttons can be sewn closely side by side or “kissing” – slightly overlapping, which requires a thin button with a flat edge. Sleeve horn buttons should come from the same batch as the front buttons to match in tone.

Colour and pattern matching the fabric

  • Dark blue and grey suits – dark brown or almost black horn; for lighter grey tones – marbled buttons with lighter veins.
  • Black suits – uniform black horn without contrasting veins.
  • Brown, beige, tweed – marbled horn with honey and grey shades.
  • Summer linen suits – lighter horn or buttons with light areas.

Since every horn button is unique, we ensure the set for one jacket is harmonious – especially for the visible front buttons.

Finish: glossy or matte

Polished glossy horn buttons emphasise the formal character of the suit and suit smooth wool fabrics. Matte or semi-matte finishes are suitable for flannel, tweed, velvet, and sporty-elegant jackets. For tuxedos, tradition often prefers satin-covered buttons, but glossy black horn buttons are also accepted.

Sewing horn buttons on a jacket

  1. Front buttons are sewn with a shank about the thickness of the fabric at the buttonhole.
  2. Strong thread matching the button or fabric colour is used.
  3. For four-hole buttons, the stitch can be parallel (=) or cross (×); parallel or “Z” stitch is usually preferred for jackets.
  4. Sleeve buttons are sewn tightly without a high shank, especially for “kissing” buttons.
  5. Inside, under the front button, a small backing button is placed for heavier fabrics.

Horn or imitation for suits?

For premium collections, natural horn is unmatched in feel. For larger runs and more affordable price points, many brands use polyester imitation horn buttons, which are uniform and more economical. It is best to decide at the design stage, as this affects positioning and garment price. More about men's buttons is available in the men's buttons category.

Care for suits with horn buttons

Suits are usually dry cleaned, which horn buttons tolerate well. When ironing the front, avoid direct contact with buttons or place a cloth over them, as horn does not like high direct heat. Some ateliers cover buttons with foil during dry cleaning – a sensible precaution for expensive garments.

Common mistakes

  • Front and sleeve buttons from different batches with mismatched tone.
  • Button too large for a slim, modern jacket.
  • Sewing without a shank, causing fabric puckering around the buttonhole.
  • Bright contrasting veins on a strict formal suit.
  • No spare buttons included with the finished garment.

Set selection

No two natural horn buttons are identical. Therefore, the set for one jacket is arranged manually: the closest matching buttons in tone and grain go to the front, where they are most visible, and the rest to sleeves, vest, and trousers. In serial production, this preparation is part of the manufacturer's work and greatly facilitates the tailoring workshop.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many buttons are on a suit jacket sleeve?
Usually, a suit jacket sleeve has three or four buttons. Three buttons are typical for more casual and sporty models, while four are standard for classic business suits. The typical size is 24L, about 15 mm. Buttons can be decorative on a closed vent or functional with working buttonholes on higher-end and bespoke jackets.
What size is the button on the front of a suit jacket?
The standard size for the front of a single-breasted jacket is 32L, about 20 mm in diameter. For slimmer, modern cuts, 30L is used, and for double-breasted jackets and wider lapels, 32L–34L. The button size should match the buttonhole length, so it is specified during tailoring.
What colour horn buttons suit a dark blue suit?
For dark blue suits, the classic choice is dark brown or almost black horn buttons that blend well with the fabric. For a more casual look, marbled horn with moderately light veins can be chosen. Avoid strongly contrasting light buttons on business suits unless a deliberate modern accent is desired.
