A metal perfume label is a thin metal plate or emblem with the name or mark of the brand, attached to the bottle, the cap or the box. It is most often glued onto the glass, set into a moulded recess in the bottle, or hung as a medallion on a chain or cord around the neck. The type, the shape and the method of application are chosen together, because they all depend on the shape of the bottle.

What a metal perfume label is and why brands choose it

A paper or transparent self-adhesive label carries the information, but rarely creates an emotion. A metal label adds volume, sheen and weight – the customer touches it with their fingers, and the light on the edges and relief makes the brand name visible even from a distance on the shelf. Metal does not fade or rub off the way print does, so the bottle looks good even after months on the dressing table.

Often the metal label is the only branding element on the front. The mandatory information goes on the box or the bottom of the bottle, leaving only the glass, the cap and the emblem on the front. This clean, minimalist approach is characteristic of niche perfumery and of brands that want the bottle to look like an object rather than packaging.

Types of metal perfume labels

By production method

  • Die-cast labels – cast from zinc alloy, they allow deep relief, several height levels and a complex outline. Suitable for crests, monograms and three-dimensional emblems.
  • Stamped labels – cut and embossed from thin sheet metal. They are light, with clean edges, and convenient for flat or slightly curved bottle walls.
  • Smooth plates with engraving or printing – the logo is applied to a flat surface. A good choice for thin typefaces, long fragrance names and numbered limited editions.

By placement

  • front label – the main plate with the brand or fragrance name on the front of the bottle;
  • cap label – a small emblem on the top or side of the cap;
  • hanging medallion – with a hole for a chain, cord or ribbon around the neck;
  • box label – a larger plate on the lid of a rigid gift box.

Shapes and sizes of the metal label

The shape should echo the character of the bottle. An angular bottle with flat walls takes a rectangular plate, while a rounded bottle looks more harmonious with an oval or medallion.

ShapeWhen it is suitable
RectangularFlat bottles, brand name on one line, classic style
Oval or roundRounded bottles, seals, medallions, monograms
Trapezoid or bevelledBottles with sloping walls and a geometric look
Cut-out outlineLogo symbol, crest or figure without a background plate
Curved to the radiusCylindrical and oval bottles, where a flat plate would stick out

The size is determined by the area of the front. Leave a free margin between the label and the edges of the bottle so that it does not look cluttered. Also check legibility: the smaller the label, the simpler the logo needs to be, because every technique has a minimum line thickness and a minimum letter size.

Metal colours and surfaces

The label is made in any metal colour – gold, light gold, rose gold, silver, nickel colour, gunmetal, black, antique brass, antique silver – with a gloss, matte, satin or brushed surface. A striking combination is a matte background with a polished raised logo. All Polkom metal accessories are nickel free; “nickel” and “black nickel” are only colour names. See the palette in Colours and finishes.

If the bottle also has a metal perfume cap, order the two elements in the same finish. Even a small difference in the shade of gold between the cap and the label is immediately visible when they sit side by side.

How the metal label is applied to the bottle

Gluing onto the glass

This is the most common method. The back of the label is flat or curved to the shape of the bottle, and it is attached with an adhesive layer or glue suitable for metal and glass. The adhesive must be alcohol resistant, because drops of perfume inevitably land on the bottle.

  1. Degrease the area – the glass must be clean, dry and free of fingerprints.
  2. Use a template or jig so that the label is at the same height and angle on every bottle.
  3. Apply the glue or peel off the protective film and press the label evenly over its entire area.
  4. Let the adhesive set according to its manufacturer’s instructions before the bottles go into the boxes.
  5. Test a sample: rubbing, a drop of perfume on the edge, exposure to heat and cold.

Setting into a recess in the bottle

Some bottles have a recess moulded into the glass, in which the label sits flush with the surface. The result is very clean, but requires exact dimensions – so for this option, send a bottle or technical drawing with your inquiry.

Hanging label

A medallion with a hole is hung on a chain, cord or ribbon around the neck. It requires no glue, suits bottles with complex shapes and adds a handmade, gift-like look.

Label on the cap

A small metal emblem can be inset into the top of the cap – both metal and polyester. This way the logo is visible from above, while the front of the bottle stays clean.

Common mistakes with metal labels

  • a flat plate on a strongly curved bottle – the edges peel off over time;
  • letters too small for the chosen technique – the lettering merges;
  • adhesive not tested with perfume – the label falls off while still in the shop;
  • a different shade from the cap and the box foil;
  • approval based on a drawing only, without a sample on the real bottle.

The metal label can also be repeated on the packaging – for example a larger plate on the lid of a perfume box. This way the bottle and the box speak the same language.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is a metal label glued onto a glass bottle?
The area is degreased, the label is positioned with a template and pressed evenly with an adhesive layer or glue suitable for metal and glass. The adhesive must be alcohol resistant, because drops of perfume land on the bottle. Before the production run, always test a sample with rubbing, perfume and temperature changes.
Can a metal label be applied to a rounded bottle?
Yes. For cylindrical and oval bottles, the label is made curved to the radius of the glass so that it fits over its entire area. A flat plate on a rounded surface touches the glass only in the middle, and its edges gradually peel off. For an exact radius, send a bottle or technical drawing.
What size should the metal label be?
The size is determined by the front of the bottle and the complexity of the logo. Leave a free margin to the edges so that the bottle does not look cluttered, and check that the smallest letters remain legible with the chosen technique. The safest way is a sample on the real bottle.
Do the metal labels contain nickel?
No. All Polkom metal accessories, including perfume labels, are nickel free. “Nickel” and “black nickel” are only colour names of the finish, not the composition of the metal. That is why the labels are suitable for products the customer touches every day, including boxes and caps.
