Mother-of-pearl buttons with a logo are most often made by laser engraving: the beam removes a thin layer of the lustrous surface and leaves a matte, light mark that contrasts with the iridescent mother-of-pearl. The method suits logos, monograms and short inscriptions, requires no die and gives a precise result even on 16L–18L shirt buttons. To look good, the logo must be simplified and prepared as a vector file.
Why brands choose mother-of-pearl buttons with a logo
The button is one of the few elements of a shirt that the customer touches every day. An engraved mark on natural mother-of-pearl is a discreet signal of quality – it does not shout like a large label, but it is noticed by anyone who looks at the garment closely. That is why shirt brands, bespoke ateliers and boutique labels use engraved buttons as a signature. A personalised button also makes the product harder to copy and makes the spare buttons part of the packaging and the purchase experience.
How laser engraving on mother-of-pearl works
Mother-of-pearl is a mineral-organic material. During engraving the laser heats and vaporises a microscopic layer of the surface. Where the engraving is, the lustre disappears, leaving a matte area that is usually whiter or lighter than the background. The darker the mother-of-pearl, the stronger the contrast – on dark and dyed mother-of-pearl the engraving stands out especially clearly, while on white trochus it is more delicate, like a watermark.
The method has several advantages:
- no die – no tooling is made, so changing the design is easy;
- high precision – thin lines and small letters are reproduced;
- durability – the engraving is part of the material and does not wash off;
- flexibility – the same logo can be placed on buttons of different sizes.
Other marking methods
Deep engraving with colour fill
The engraving is made deeper and then filled with colour. This allows the logo to be black, gold or in the brand’s corporate colour. The method is more labour-intensive and requires a thicker button.
Lathe-turned relief
Instead of a logo, a distinctive profile is formed on the face – a rim, a recess or concentric circles. It is a “signature” without lettering, suitable for brands that want a unique style but do not insist on a visible logo.
Engraving on the back
Some brands put their name on the back of the button. The face stays clean, and the mark is only visible when unbuttoned. It is an elegant solution for classic business shirts.
How to prepare the logo
- Vector file – AI, EPS, SVG or PDF with vector curves. A raster JPG gives jagged edges.
- Simplification – on an 18L button (about 11.5 mm) the usable area is a circle about 6–7 mm in diameter between the holes and the rim. Complex emblems need to be reduced to initials or a symbol.
- Line thickness – fine strokes disappear at small sizes. Check the logo printed at actual scale.
- Text – on small buttons choose a sans-serif font and no more than a few letters.
- Position relative to the holes – on a four-hole button the logo is often placed in the upper half or around the holes as a ring.
What suits the different sizes
| Size | Diameter | Recommended marking |
|---|---|---|
| 14L | ≈ 9 mm | symbol or initial, most often on the back |
| 16L–18L | ≈ 10–11.5 mm | monogram, short name, ring of text around the holes |
| 20–24L | ≈ 12.5–15 mm | logo with more detail, brand name |
| 28L and above | ≈ 18 mm and above | full logo, ornament, border |
The ordering process
- Brief – you send the logo, type of shell, sizes, number of holes and approximate quantities.
- Proposal – you receive a visualisation of the logo placement on the button.
- Sample – sample buttons are made, which you test on the fabric and when sewing on.
- Approval – once approved, the sample becomes the reference for the production run.
- Series production and delivery – lead times and minimum quantities depend on the item and are specified in the quotation.
A consistent look across branded accessories
An engraved button works best when it is part of a system. If the brand already has a woven neck label, a hang tag and a leather or metal logo plate, use the same mark on the button too – for example just the monogram from the logo. The button does not need to repeat the full company name; it is enough that it is recognisable. Think about the spare buttons too: a small bag or card with two engraved buttons attached to the label is a detail customers notice. On corporate shirts and uniforms with engraved buttons, the company mark remains visible even when the employee is not wearing a jacket or tie.
Common mistakes
- a logo that is too detailed for a small button;
- engraving that falls on the holes or too close to the rim;
- choosing very light mother-of-pearl when the brand wants a contrasting mark;
- approval from a photo only, without a physical sample;
- forgetting the quantity of spare buttons for the packaging.
Engraving is also done on other materials – metal, corozo, wood, bone. See examples in the engraved buttons category, and for a complete look for menswear collections, men’s buttons. The core mother-of-pearl styles are in the mother-of-pearl buttons category.
