For private label perfumes, besides the fragrance and bottle, you need a cap, a logo label, a box with an insert, and usually several extras – ribbon, bag or hanging medallion. All these elements depend on each other: the cap is sized to the bottle neck, and the box is sized to the bottle with the cap. That’s why the order of decisions is as important as the decisions themselves.

1. The Bottle – The Starting Point
Everything starts with the bottle. The neck and pump determine the inner size of the cap, and the height and width of the bottle with the cap determine the size of the box and insert. If the bottle changes later, the cap and box almost always need to be redesigned. Choose the bottle first and get at least a few samples to send to the accessory manufacturers.
2. The Cap
The cap is the most visible branded detail after the label. The main choice is between two materials:
- Metal Cap – weighty, cool to the touch, and luxurious; any size and shape, any metal colour – gold, rose gold, silver, gunmetal, black, antique. All Polkom metal products are nickel free.
- Polyester Cap – any Pantone colour, solid, mixed or marble effect, matte or glossy; suitable for colourful and youthful lines.
The logo on the cap can be engraved, embossed, debossed, enamelled or printed. If you plan several fragrances, consider whether the cap will be the same for the whole line or if each fragrance will have its own colour.
3. The Logo Label
The metal perfume label places the brand name on the bottle with volume and shine. It is made in any size, shape and metal colour and is usually in the same tone as the cap. An alternative is direct glass decoration at the bottle manufacturer. Whatever you choose, decide in advance where the mandatory information will be placed to keep the front clean.
Perfumes in the European Union are cosmetic products and fall under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The content of the labelling is the responsibility of the brand and the responsible person – consult a specialist before approving the printing texts.
4. The Box and Insert
The box is designed last among the main elements because it depends on the bottle with the cap. Foldable boxes are standard for serial products, while rigid boxes are for niche fragrances and gift sets. The insert holds the bottle securely and protects the cap from impact. The logo on the box is usually hot stamped with foil, embossed or partially UV varnished, and rigid boxes may have a metal plate. See formats and finishes in perfume and cosmetics boxes.
5. Extras
- Satin or organza ribbon with logo to close the gift box;
- Paper bag with logo for stores and events;
- Tissue paper for wrapping in online orders;
- Hanging metal medallion on a chain or cord around the bottle neck.
These details are small but make unboxing memorable and match the metal colour or Pantone of the other elements.
6. Samples – Don’t Skip This Step
The sample is where you find problems while they are still easy to fix. Check:
- cap fit – it should sit snugly without wobbling or being too tight;
- metal tone matching the foil on the box and the label;
- logo readability at actual size;
- whether the bottle with cap fits freely but securely in the insert;
- how all elements look together in daylight and artificial light.
7. Timing – How to Plan
Specific deadlines depend on the items, techniques and quantities, so clarify them with each manufacturer. Regardless, the correct order saves the most time:
- Choose the bottle and secure samples.
- Send inquiries for the cap and label in parallel – both depend only on the bottle and logo.
- After receiving the cap sample, finalise the box and insert size.
- Approve all samples together before placing serial orders.
- Allow time for corrections, especially if the launch is seasonal or holiday-related.
The most common cause of delays is changing the bottle or logo after samples are approved. Lock these two decisions as early as possible.
Common Mistakes When Starting a Perfume Brand
- Ordering the box before the cap – the insert doesn’t fit and the bottle moves.
- Different metal tones – cap, label and foil approved separately.
- Logo not adapted for small sizes – the cap text blurs.
- No space for mandatory text – last-minute box redesign needed.
- Ordering everything for one fragrance only – when the line expands, accessories for the second fragrance look unrelated.
Think of the Whole Line, Not Just One Fragrance
Most brands start with one or two fragrances but rarely stop there. At the first order, decide which elements will be common for the whole line – for example, the cap shape and metal logo label – and which will change for each fragrance: polyester cap colour, enamel colour, engraved name or box colour. This way, each new fragrance is added quickly without new design from scratch, and the brand’s product shelf looks like one family.
