Satin Label for Clothing – Advantages, Types and Applications

A satin label for clothing is made from smooth polyester satin ribbon with a shiny face where your logo or text is printed or woven. It is soft, thin and pleasant against the skin, making it ideal for lingerie, blouses, dresses, pajamas and children’s clothing. Satin labels come as single-sided or double-sided satin, in various widths and folding styles.

What makes satin different

Satin is a weave where threads in one direction “float” over several threads in the other direction. This creates a smooth, light-reflecting front side and a more matte back. For labels, this offers three practical benefits: a smooth surface that doesn’t irritate the skin, a good base for fine printing, and an elegant look suited to premium products.

Single-sided satin

Shiny only on one side. Printing is done on the front, with the matte side against the fabric. Suitable for labels sewn along the edges or perimeter where only one side is visible.

Double-sided satin

Smooth and shiny on both sides. Used for centrally folded and hang tags where both sides are visible, as well as for care labels with text on front and back. It feels thicker and more luxurious.

Satin labels for clothing: printing or weaving

Most satin labels are printed. Printing allows fine text, multiple lines, care symbols and easy data changes between versions. Satin can also be the base for woven labels—then the logo is woven in, while the surface remains smooth and shiny. Woven satin is softer than classic damask woven labels but with less sharp details. For comparison with other technologies, see printed labels and woven labels in the same category.

Ribbon and print colours

The most common satin colours are white, black and cream. Coloured satin is used when the label is part of the brand design—for example, dark blue satin with silver text or powder pink for a baby collection. Printing is most legible with strong contrast. Gold and silver effects look impressive but should be tested for washing durability. Ribbon colour is matched by Pantone or fabric sample.

Sizes and folding styles

Satin labels come in a wide range of widths—from narrow size labels to wide care labels. Size depends on placement and information amount. Common folding styles are:

  • Central fold – sewn into the seam and hangs like a flag;
  • Edge fold – sewn on top of fabric with no exposed edges;
  • Mitre fold – for collars and top seams;
  • Straight cut – sewn around the perimeter.

Edge finishing

Satin is synthetic and edges must be sealed after cutting to prevent fraying. This is done with a hot knife or ultrasound. Hot knife is fast but can leave a slightly hard edge. Ultrasound seals more softly and is preferred for labels touching the skin. For lingerie and children’s wear, request soft edge finishing.

Care and durability

Polyester satin does not shrink or lose shape in washing. Label durability mainly depends on printing. Textile inks designed for labels keep print legible after many washes at normal home temperatures. If the garment will be washed very hot or dry cleaned, mention this in your inquiry to select suitable printing and test samples. Satin does not tolerate very high ironing temperatures—iron the label through fabric or from the back side.

Satin label or satin ribbon

Sometimes ateliers buy satin ribbon by the metre and cut their own labels. This works for decoration but ordinary decorative ribbon is not designed for printing and often lacks sealed edges. Labels made from special label ribbon have the right density, printing surface and edge finishing.

Common questions when choosing

  • Is satin see-through? White satin is opaque, but dark print on it may show through very thin white fabric.
  • Does it slip when sewing? Yes, it is slipperier than taffeta. Use clips instead of pins and longer stitch length.
  • Is it suitable for sportswear? Yes, especially if folded at edges and sewn flat.

Set of satin labels

Satin is a convenient base for all internal garment marking. Brand label, size label and care label can be made from the same ribbon, in one colour and font. This keeps the garment interior tidy and helps customers recognise the brand immediately. A practical solution is a narrow size label sewn in the same seam just below the brand label. The care label can be double-sided satin with several pages and placed in the left side seam. If the brand has several lines—such as main, children’s and sports—the satin colour can differentiate them while font and logo remain the same.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which is softer, satin or cotton label?
Both are soft but in different ways. Satin is smooth, slippery and thin, so it is barely felt on the neck. Cotton is matte and warmer to the touch but slightly thicker and may shrink a little in washing. Satin is more often chosen for lingerie and blouses, cotton for eco and organic collections.
Can satin labels have text on both sides?
Yes, if double-sided satin is used. It is smooth on both sides and allows printing front and back, which is convenient for care labels with lots of information or centrally folded labels where both sides are visible. Single-sided satin prints only on the shiny face.
Does printing on satin labels withstand washing?
When using textile inks designed for labels, printing remains legible after many washes at normal home temperatures. Durability depends on printing type and washing conditions. If the garment will be washed very hot or dry cleaned, mention this in your inquiry so we can select the right technology and test samples.
