Satin ribbon with logo or text is produced by printing directly onto the ribbon – most commonly with hot foil stamping (gold, silver), screen printing, heat transfer or sublimation. The method depends on the ribbon colour, logo details, number of colours, and whether the ribbon will be washed. Branded satin ribbons are used for packaging, ribbons, hangers, and decorative elements in clothing.
Where branded satin ribbons are used
- Packaging – ribbons for boxes, bags, and boutique, confectionery, jewellery, and cosmetics brands.
- Clothing – logo hangers in coats and jackets, decorative ribbons along seams, ribbons for closing bags for lingerie and shoes.
- Events – satin ribbons with text for weddings, christenings, and anniversaries, ribbons for bouquets and guest gifts.
- Advertising – ribbons for openings, shop windows, promotional gifts, and vouchers.
If the logo should be inside the garment as a label rather than a decorative ribbon, printed labels are more suitable; they are made on the same principle but comply with labelling requirements.
Printing methods for satin ribbon with text
Hot foil stamping
Metallic foil (gold, silver, rose gold, copper) is transferred onto the ribbon with a heated die under pressure. It gives a luxurious, shiny effect and is the most popular choice for packaging and wedding ribbons. Suitable for single-colour logos and text with clear contours. Very fine details and thin lines may merge, so the logo is reviewed before printing.
Screen printing
Ink is transferred through a mesh screen. Suitable for solid, saturated colours and larger runs with the same logo. Each colour requires a separate screen, so multi-colour designs are more labour-intensive.
Heat transfer printing
A thermal printer transfers pigment from a ribbon (ribbon roll) onto the satin. Allows quick text changes, short runs, and sequential prints – for example, different names. Requires a smooth surface ribbon, such as satin.
Sublimation
Used on white or very light polyester ribbons. The ink turns into gas and penetrates the fibre, so the print is not felt to the touch and withstands washing. Allows full-colour images and gradients but does not work well on dark ribbons.
Comparison of printing methods
| Method | Effect | Colours | Washability | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foil | metallic shine | one foil colour | limited | packaging, weddings, luxury brands |
| Screen printing | solid, slightly raised | 1–3 colours | good | runs with one logo |
| Heat transfer | smooth, precise | mainly 1 colour | good with suitable ribbon | short runs, names, text |
| Sublimation | flat, full colour | unlimited | very good | white polyester ribbons, photos |
Woven logo ribbon as an alternative
Besides printing, there are jacquard ribbons where the logo is woven into the ribbon itself. They are more durable and look more expensive but require larger quantities and longer lead times. For most packaging and seasonal campaigns, printing on satin ribbon is the more flexible choice.
How to prepare your logo for ribbon printing
- Vector file – AI, EPS, PDF or SVG with text converted to outlines.
- Logo height – match it to the ribbon width; leave margins on both sides so the print is not cut off at the edge.
- Minimum line thickness – fine lines in foil and screen printing fill in. Simplify the logo for narrow ribbons.
- Colour – specify Pantone for ink or foil type, as well as the ribbon colour.
- Repeat – the distance between two prints (repeat length). For ribbons, this determines if the logo appears in the visible area.
How to choose the ribbon for branding
Smooth, dense satin ribbon is more suitable for printing. If the ribbon is visible on both sides, choose double-sided ribbon and specify if printing is needed on one side only. Contrast is key: gold foil on black, burgundy or dark blue ribbon reads excellently, while light foil on white ribbon almost disappears. For texts like “I love you”, “Happy Birthday” or a brand name, check readability from a distance – the print must be instantly recognisable.
Ribbon width relative to logo
The most used widths for branding are 10 to 25 mm for packaging and hangers, and from 38 mm upwards for decorative ribbons and events. On narrow ribbons, the logo should be short and highly legible – often just a symbol or name without a slogan. On wide ribbons, there is room for a logo and website or a short message. If unsure, send us the box or product size and we will suggest a suitable width.
What affects the price of branded ribbon
- printing method and number of colours;
- preparation – foil die or screen for screen printing;
- ribbon width and type (single or double sided);
- total metres and number of different designs;
- whether the ribbon is delivered on a roll or cut and packed.
The exact price is calculated after a quote request with design and quantity details.
