The main types of rings used in garment and accessory production are round (O-rings), D-rings, rectangular and square rings, oval rings, triangle rings and split (spiral) rings. The shape determines how the strap lies: a straight side holds the strap flat, while a rounded side lets a snap hook or clip move freely. The choice depends on the strap width, the load and the style of the product.
Types of rings by shape
If you are looking at wholesale rings for the first time, it is easiest to start with the shape, because it determines the function. Material and finish come after that.
Round rings (O-rings)
A round ring has no orientation – the strap can turn in any direction. That makes it handy wherever parts of a product need to move relative to each other: the joint between a handle and the body of a bag, a key ring attachment point, a link between two straps. The drawback is that a wide strap bunches up in the round shape and forms a fold, so O-rings are suitable mainly for narrow straps and cords.
D-rings
A D-ring has one straight and one rounded side. The strap is folded around the straight side and stays flat, while a snap hook is clipped onto the rounded side or another strap is passed through it. This is the most common shape on bags, belts, backpacks and collars. A pair of D-rings is also used as an adjustment mechanism on webbing belts.
Rectangular and square rings
These rings keep the strap flat on both sides. They are used on flat straps, backpack shoulder straps, transitions between two straps of the same width and on belts where it is important that the strap does not twist. A rectangular ring with a centre bar is already a slider – it allows the length to be adjusted.
Oval rings
The oval is a compromise between the round and D shapes: a softer silhouette but with a wider section for the strap. It is often chosen for fashion bags and decorative belts, where the look matters as much as the function.
Triangle rings
A triangle ring has a base for the strap and an apex in which a snap hook sits in a stable position. It is found on backpacks, sports bags and pet harnesses.
Split (spiral) rings
These are key rings – a flat or round wire wound in two coils, between which keys, charms or tags are slipped. They are not used for straps but for hanging small items.
Comparison table of ring types
| Type | How the strap lies | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Round (O) | Bunches up, allows rotation | Joints, key rings, narrow straps |
| D-ring | Flat on the straight side | Bags, belts, collars, backpacks |
| Rectangular | Flat on both sides | Flat straps, shoulder straps |
| Oval | Slightly rounded | Fashion bags and belts |
| Triangle | Flat on the base | Backpacks, sports bags, harnesses |
| Split | Not used with a strap | Key rings, charms |
Types of rings by construction
Besides shape, rings also differ in the way they are made. This directly affects strength and appearance.
- Bent from wire, non-welded – the ends of the wire just touch. An economical option for decorative elements and light products.
- Bent from wire, welded – the joint is welded and cleaned up. Suitable for shoulder straps, belts and anything that carries weight.
- Die-cast rings – cast in one piece, most often in zinc alloy. They have no joint, can have a flat or bevelled profile and allow a raised logo.
- Stamped from sheet – cut from metal sheet, flat, suitable for thin products.
- Plastic – moulded from engineering plastics, light and moisture-resistant, for sports and children's products.
How to choose the right type of ring
- Define the function. Does the ring join two parts, serve as an attachment point or adjust a length? Joining – O or D; attachment – D or triangle; adjustment – rectangular with a bar or a pair of D-rings.
- Measure the strap. The inner width of the ring should be equal to or slightly larger than the width of the strap, plus an allowance for its thickness.
- Assess the load. For handles and shoulder straps of heavy bags choose welded or die-cast rings with a thicker profile.
- Match the hardware. The ring should be in the same finish as the metal buckles, snap hooks and zip pullers so that the product looks finished.
- Ask for a sample. Test the ring with the real strap and material before starting a run.
Which type of ring for which product
On women's handbags, D-rings for the shoulder strap are most often combined with round or oval rings as a decorative accent. On webbing belts a pair of D-rings replaces the buckle, while on leather belts rings are part of the decorative hardware. Backpacks and sports bags use rectangular and triangle rings, because the straps there are wide and take a greater load. On collars and leads the D-ring is standard, as the lead's snap hook clips onto it. Split rings are used for key rings, tags and charms.
Common mistakes when choosing
- A ring exactly the width of the strap, with no allowance for its thickness – the strap bunches up and does not slide.
- A round ring for a wide shoulder strap – the strap twists and wears.
- A non-welded ring on the handle of a heavy bag – over time the joint opens.
- Different finish shades on rings, buckles and rivets from different suppliers.
