Woven labels with metallic thread feature logos or details woven from metallic yarns in gold, silver, bronze, or other metallic shades. These threads are typically polyester foil coated with a metallic layer, wrapped or twisted with a carrier yarn rather than real metal. They add shine and a premium look, most often combined with dark bases such as black, navy, or burgundy.
What are woven labels with metallic thread?
The metallic yarn, often called Lurex, is used as one of the weft colours in the label. The loom brings it to the front where the logo or detail appears, while on other parts it passes on the back. Thus, the metallic thread occupies one of the limited colour positions in the label.
Metallic thread can also be used as a background, but this is rare: the label becomes stiffer, and logos on shiny bases are harder to read. More commonly, the metallic effect is in the logo, with a matte, dark base. Another option is a thin metallic stripe along the label edge, highlighting its shape without overwhelming the design.
Types of metallic effects
- Gold – the most popular, available in warm and cooler shades.
- Silver – a cool, modern look; works well on black and grey bases.
- Bronze, copper, rose gold – less common, for specific branding needs.
- Holographic and coloured metallic – for fashion and children’s collections.
Base fabric combinations
| Base | Metallic Colour | Impression |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Gold | Classic luxury |
| Black or graphite | Silver | Modern, technical |
| Dark blue | Gold | Marine, elegant style |
| Burgundy | Gold | Evening and festive wear |
| White or cream | Gold | Delicate, bridal, lingerie |
Metallic thread is most visible on dark bases. On light bases, gold appears less contrasting, so logos should be larger.
Detail and limitations
Metallic thread is usually thicker and stiffer than standard polyester, so it conveys less detail. Very fine text and thin metallic lines may look broken. It is practical to use metallic thread for the main logo or brand name, leaving small text in regular colours. Request a sample if unsure.
Partial metallic use
The entire logo does not have to be metallic. Often the effect is stronger when metallic highlights only one element – a symbol, frame, line, or initial. This keeps the label elegant without being flashy.
Comfort: does metallic thread irritate?
Metallic threads are stiffer than normal yarns and can be felt if used improperly, especially on the label’s back where threads float. For neck and lingerie labels, we recommend:
- smaller metallic areas;
- soft damask or satin base fabric;
- edges finished with ultrasonic cutting or woven borders;
- folding the label in the middle so the back does not touch skin directly;
- testing a sample on a real garment.
For external labels on pockets, bags, and hats, comfort is less critical and metallic areas can be larger.
Washing and care
Metallic threads tolerate normal home washing but are more sensitive to high temperatures, harsh detergents, and bleaching. When ironing, it is best to iron the label from the reverse side or through a cloth at low temperature. If the garment requires high-temperature washing, discuss the thread type with the manufacturer and test samples.
Woven label with metallic thread or metal plate?
If you want a true metal effect, volume, and weight, a metal plate may be more suitable. Here is a brief comparison:
- Woven label with metallic thread – soft, lightweight, flexible; shine within the weave; suitable for inside and outside use.
- Metal plate – rigid, with volume and weight; luxurious accent on the outside; see metal plates.
- Leather label with hot-stamped gold – vintage and premium look; see leather labels.
Where metallic thread is best suited
- Evening and formal wear.
- Luxury lingerie and nightwear.
- Festive and gift collections.
- Accessories – scarves, bags, hats.
- Brands positioned in the premium segment.
Metallic effect on different fabric types
On damask, metallic thread appears as a clear, even shine contrasting well with the matte base. On satin, the shine of the base and metallic thread blend, creating a softer, more luxurious effect but less contrast. On taffeta, the rougher texture makes the metallic look grainier. For a strong metallic accent, matte dark damask is the safest choice.
Metal and brand identity
Gold and silver evoke luxury and festivity, so use them consciously. For minimalist or sporty brands, a small silver detail may suit better than a large gold logo. If you use metal accessories – buttons, eyelets, buckles – coordinate the thread colour with them for a cohesive look.
Design and pricing
When preparing your design, specify which elements should be metallic and the desired shade – warm or cool gold, silver. Label price depends on the metallic thread type, metallic area size, label size, number of colours, and quantity. Specific pricing is provided upon request.
