Woven or Printed Label – Comparison and When to Choose Each

Woven or printed label – the answer depends on the intended use. The woven label is more durable and premium, making it the best choice for brand logos. The printed label offers more detail and text, allows gradients, and is usually thinner, making it the standard for care labels and delicate fabrics. Many brands use both types simultaneously.

Woven or printed label – the main difference

With a woven label, the image is created by the threads themselves: the loom interlaces coloured threads to “draw” the logo. With a printed label, the image is applied onto a ready-made tape – satin, polyester taffeta, cotton or nonwoven material – by thermal transfer, screen printing or other printing methods. This difference determines everything else: durability, appearance, detail and price.

It is important to clarify terminology. In trade, “textile label” is sometimes used as a general term for both types, while “satin label” can mean either a woven label with a satin texture or a printed label on satin tape. When requesting a quote, specify whether the logo should be woven or printed to get comparable offers.

When to choose woven label

  • For the brand logo label on the neck or side seam.
  • For external labels on pockets, sleeves, hats and bags that are visible and subject to rubbing.
  • When you want a textured, dense, “luxury” look.
  • When the garment is washed often and the label must look good for years.

When to choose printed label

  • For composition, ISO 3758 care symbols and manufacturer information.
  • For text in multiple languages.
  • For very thin and delicate fabrics – underwear, swimwear, sportswear.
  • For labels with gradients, photographic elements or many colours.
  • For labels with variable information – article numbers, batches.

More options are available in the printed labels category.

Comfort: which label itches less

The printed label on satin tape is thinner and therefore often feels less. But a well-made woven label from soft damask or satin, with ultrasonic cutting or woven edges, is also fully comfortable. The “itchy label” problem usually comes from hard, hot-cut edges or an overly large label, not the technology itself.

Durability in washing

The woven label keeps its appearance as long as the garment lasts. The printed label can be equally durable if the tape and ink combination is properly chosen – for example, thermal transfer on polyester tape. With unsuitable printing, the text may fade or crack after repeated washing. This is important for care labels because the information must remain readable.

Price: what affects it

For woven labels, price depends on fabric type, size, number of colours, cutting and folding. For printed labels, it depends on tape material, printing method, number of colours and length. Quantity is the strongest factor for both types. It is not possible to say which is cheaper, so it is wise to request quotes for both options for your specific design.

The combination most brands use

  1. Woven brand label – logo on neck or seam.
  2. Printed care label – composition, care, manufacturer, in side seam.
  3. Size label – small woven or printed, next to the brand label.

This way the logo looks premium, and the information is complete and easily changed for each model.

Practical examples

T-shirt and sweatshirt brand

Woven damask label with logo, folded in half and sewn into the collar; printed care label in side seam; small woven size label. A classic and reliable combination.

Underwear and swimwear brand

Printed label on soft satin tape or directly printed label, because every millimetre of softness counts. If the brand insists on woven label, it is small, satin, ultrasonic cut and sewn into a seam that does not touch sensitive areas.

Outerwear brand

Larger woven brand label, often HD for more detail, plus external woven label on sleeve or pocket. Composition and care on a printed label, because jackets usually have more extensive information due to lining and filling.

How to decide for your collection

Ask yourself a few questions. Does the label carry only a logo or a lot of text? Is it visible outside or only inside? Is the garment thin and does the label touch the skin? How important is a premium look for your brand positioning? If the answers point to logo, visibility and premium, choose woven. If they point to text, function and delicate fabric, choose printed. If you need both, combine.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which is more durable – woven or printed label?
Generally, woven labels are more durable because the image is formed by the threads themselves and cannot fade or crack. Quality printed labels with properly selected ink and tape also withstand repeated washing, but with unsuitable combinations, the text may fade. For brand logos, woven is the safer choice.
Which label is softer – woven or printed?
Printed labels on satin tape are usually thinner and softer. Woven labels are thicker, but soft damask or satin with ultrasonic cutting is also comfortable. The key factors are edge finishing, size and sewing method. For underwear and baby clothes, many brands prefer printed or very small soft woven labels.
Can I weave the composition on the label?
Technically possible but usually impractical. Composition, care symbols and manufacturer data involve a lot of text that must be legible, and fine fonts are limited in weaving. Also, composition changes by model. Therefore, this information is usually placed on a separate printed care label.
