Woven patches are logo emblems woven on a jacquard loom using the same technique as woven labels but designed for the garment’s outer side. They differ from labels in size, edge finishing (often overlock edging), and backing – for sewing, heat seal, or hook and loop attachment. Patches are a better choice than direct embroidery when the logo is detailed, when one emblem must be applied to many different products, or when it needs to be removable.
Woven Label or Woven Patch – What’s the Difference?
The technology is the same: the logo, text, and background are formed by interlacing coloured polyester threads. The difference lies in the purpose and finishing.
| Criterion | Woven Label | Woven Patch |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | Inside – neck, side seam | Outside – chest, sleeve, back, cap, backpack |
| Function | Information, brand | Visible emblem, identification |
| Shape | Usually rectangular strip | Round, oval, shield, or logo contour |
| Edge | Cut, folded | Overlock edge, laser or ultrasonic cut |
| Backing | No backing | For sewing, heat seal, or hook and loop |
| Firmness | Soft | Often reinforced to hold shape |
If you are looking for the main brand label for the garment’s inside, see woven labels. For an emblem for the outer side, choose a patch.
Types of Edge
Overlock (Merrow) Edge
The edge is tightly stitched with thread around the entire perimeter. This is the classic emblem style – uniforms, clubs, scouts, and sports patches. Suitable for round, oval, rectangular, and shield shapes with smooth curves. The edge colour can be contrasting or tone-on-tone with the background.
Laser Cutting
The laser cuts and seals the edge precisely along the logo contour. It allows complex shapes, sharp corners, and internal openings that overlock cannot cover. The edge is thin and modern, giving the patch a lighter appearance.
Hot Knife or Ultrasonic Cut
For straight edges on rectangular patches and strips. The cut is clean and does not fray.
Backing and Attachment
- Sewing – the most reliable option for frequently washed items: workwear, uniforms, children’s clothing. The patch is sewn along the edge.
- Heat Seal – a layer of adhesive on the back activated by heat press at a specific temperature, pressure, and time. Fast for serial production; for greater durability, combined with stitching.
- Hook and Loop Backing – the hook part is sewn to the patch, and the soft loop part to the garment. The patch is removable and replaceable. Standard for tactical, outdoor, and service clothing.
- Self-Adhesive Backing – for temporary application on packaging or accessories; not suitable for washing.
Custom hook and loop patches are made by adding a hook tape strip of suitable width to the patch. The hook and loop tape on the garment is chosen in the same colour as the fabric.
When Patches Are a Better Choice than Embroidery
Direct embroidery is prestigious and permanent but has limitations. Patches are preferable in several cases:
- Detailed Logo. Weaving reproduces microtext and fine lines that embroidery cannot render legibly.
- Many Different Products. One woven logo can be sewn onto jackets, caps, backpacks, and shirts without a new file for each item.
- Hard-to-Embroider Fabrics. Thin, elastic, or thick materials where embroidery puckers or sinks.
- Emblem Replacement. With hook and loop backing, patches can be transferred between items.
- Finished Products. Sewn backpacks and bags where embroidery frame access is limited.
Embroidery remains better when tactile relief or 3D effect is desired. Patches are flat and fine.
Where Woven Patches Are Placed
Placement determines size and backing type. The most common positions are:
- Chest – main emblem on uniforms, polo shirts, and jackets; sewn or hook and loop.
- Sleeve – department badge, flag, club emblem; hook and loop is convenient if garments are redistributed.
- Cap – small patch on the front panel, sewn along the contour.
- Backpack and Bag – larger emblem, usually sewn before final assembly.
- Denim and Jackets – decorative patches, sometimes combined with leather labels.
Before production, place the sample on the actual product and view it from a distance – a patch that looks good up close may be too small on a jacket’s back.
Woven Labels and Patches in One Look
When a brand orders both a woven neck label and a woven patch for the outer side, both can use the same threads and colours. This way, the logo looks identical inside and out. It also saves time during approval – colours are agreed once.
Appliqués and Printed Patches
Besides woven patches, there are printed patches where the design is printed on a smooth polyester base. They reproduce gradients and photographic elements that weaving cannot. Fabric appliqués are another category – cut fabric shapes sewn with decorative stitching. All options are available in the patches category.
