Classic shirt buttons are the smallest yet most visible detail on the front placket, cuffs and collar. Polkom is a manufacturer of pearl-effect polyester shirt buttons – a 4-hole model with a pronounced rim, in 11 core colours and 5 pearl shades, in 9, 10, 11.5 and 12.5 mm. The model is always in stock, so you can start production without waiting for a special run.
One important point right at the start: these are not genuine mother-of-pearl buttons. They are made of polyester in which a pearlescent pigment creates a mother-of-pearl sheen. Below you will see what this means in practice, which colours we offer and how to choose the size for every position on the shirt.

What a classic shirt button is
The classic shirt button is flat, round and has four holes in a slightly recessed centre. A raised rim runs along the edge, making the button more stable and protecting the thread: the stitching sits in the middle and does not rub directly against the buttonhole. That is why this model withstands countless buttonings, washing and ironing without the thread wearing through quickly.
The four holes allow cross stitching or two parallel lines – both are standard in garment production and can be done on any button-sewing machine. The flat profile passes easily through the narrow shirt buttonhole and does not leave an imprint through the fabric when ironing.
Pearl effect, not genuine mother-of-pearl
Pearl-effect polyester buttons imitate the play of colour of mother-of-pearl but have advantages of their own: the colour is identical in every button and every batch, the material is light, withstands regular washing and rarely breaks on impact. Genuine mother-of-pearl is cut from shell, every button has its own pattern and a cool touch, but it needs more careful handling.
| Criterion | Pearl-effect polyester | Natural mother-of-pearl |
|---|---|---|
| Material | polyester resin with pearlescent pigment | mollusc shell |
| Colour | uniform, repeatable with every order | natural variation between buttons |
| Weight and touch | light, warm to the touch | heavier, cool |
| Availability | always in stock in 16 colours | depends on shell type and size |
| Suitable for | everyday, corporate and children's shirts | premium shirts and ateliers |
If you are torn between the two materials, see the detailed comparison mother-of-pearl or polyester buttons, and for checking samples – how to recognise genuine mother-of-pearl. Buttons made of natural shell are in the mother-of-pearl buttons collection.
11 colours in stock
The core range covers the classic shirt colours plus several saturated tones for fashion and children's collections. All buttons share the same shape – 4 holes and a rim – so you can combine different colours in one collection with the same size and the same buttonhole:
- white – the standard for white and pastel shirts, formal and business styles;
- grey – for grey, blue and striped shirts when white looks too contrasting;
- black – for black shirts, evening styles and contrast details;
- lemon yellow – a fresh, cool yellow for summer collections;
- orange – an accent for children's wear and casual sporty shirts;
- yellow – a warmer, more saturated yellow;
- red – for fashion shirts, uniforms and contrast sewing;
- light blue – a classic for light blue and white poplin and Oxford shirts;
- blue – for blue shirts and lighter denim;
- navy – for navy shirts, corporate wear and school uniforms;
- green – for green and khaki shirts and fashion collections.

Pearl shades: a denser colour with a soft sheen
Besides the core range we offer five pearl shades: pearl red, pearl yellow, pearl white, pearl black and pearl grey. Here the colour is solid and opaque and the sheen is even and satin-like – without the marbled pattern of the core range. The rim is wider and more pronounced, so the button looks more graphic and modern.
The pearl shades are useful when you want the button to read as a single colour accent: pearl white on a white shirt in a matt fabric, pearl black on black cotton, pearl grey on grey marl, or pearl red for uniforms and children's wear.

Sizes: 9, 10, 11.5 and 12.5 mm
The buttons come in four sizes that cover every position on a classic shirt. In garment production size is often given in lignes (1L = 0.635 mm), so the table also shows the approximate equivalent:
| Diameter | Approx. in lignes | Typical position |
|---|---|---|
| 9 mm | 14L | button-down collar points, sleeve placket, small details |
| 10 mm | 16L | front placket and cuffs of a classic shirt |
| 11.5 mm | 18L | casual, Oxford and heavier shirts |
| 12.5 mm | 20L | overshirts, flap pockets, heavier fabrics |
The usual combination is 10 mm for the front and cuffs and 9 mm for the collar and sleeve placket. How many buttons go on a shirt and how they are distributed by position is covered in the article buttons for men's shirts, and for shirts with mother-of-pearl in mother-of-pearl shirt button sizes.
How to match the colour to the fabric
The safest approach is tone on tone: the button matches the fabric or is one step lighter. The front then looks calm and the pearl sheen adds a subtle accent. Contrast – white buttons on a navy shirt or red on white, for example – emphasises the placket and works well for fashion and children's styles.
- With stripes and checks, choose the background colour, not the stripe – so the buttons don't "jump" along the front.
- For corporate wear, pick one colour for all styles so the team looks uniform.
- For white shirts, compare white and pearl white on the actual fabric – the first is more translucent, the second denser.
- Approve the colour from a sample, not from a photo on screen.

Which garments they suit
Besides men's and women's shirts, classic 4-hole buttons are used for blouses, shirt dresses, children's shirts, pyjamas, uniforms and work shirts. They are light and don't weigh down thin fabrics such as poplin, batiste and viscose. For children's wear the bright colours – yellow, orange, red, light blue – are among the most requested. More on choosing buttons for the youngest is in polyester buttons for children's clothing.
Sewing, washing and ironing
The buttons are sewn on standard 4-hole button-sewing machines. Polyester withstands regular washing and ironing at the usual settings for shirts, but should not be pressed for long with a very hot iron directly on the button. We recommend testing a sample if the shirts go through industrial laundering or press finishing. Care details are in the article washing and dyeing polyester buttons.
Metal shirt buttons – an alternative with character
If the collection is denim, workwear or a style with a stronger detail, also take a look at metal shirt buttons – with 4 and 2 holes, flat shank and half-dome, in the same sizes from 9 to 12.5 mm.
Order direct from the manufacturer
The classic pearl-effect shirt buttons are always in stock in all four sizes and 16 colours, so your order doesn't depend on a production cycle.
