Grosgrain ribbon for bags is used for the handles of textile totes, straps, edge bindings and decorative stripes. For handles and straps, choose a dense ribbon of 25–50 mm whose width matches the opening of the rings and buckles, and for bindings 20–25 mm. The matte ribbed texture looks elegant and withstands abrasion better than satin.
Why grosgrain ribbon for bags
- Stability. The ribbon does not stretch under load, so the bag does not sag.
- Comfort. The ribs do not slip on the shoulder or in the hand.
- A clean edge. The woven edges need no hemming, so the handle is thin and light.
- Style. The matte look suits cotton canvas, linen, felt and faux leather.
- Branding. A logo or lettering is easily printed on the ribbon.
Handles
Grosgrain ribbon is suitable for handles on light and medium bags: shopping and gift bags, beach and cosmetic bags, children's backpacks and promotional totes. For heavy loads – laptops, tools, travel holdalls – special polypropylene or polyester webbing woven for load-bearing is a safer choice.
Width and density
| Type of bag | Width | Density |
|---|---|---|
| Gift bag | 10–16 mm | soft to medium |
| Cosmetic bag, toiletry bag (loop) | 16–25 mm | medium |
| Textile shopping bag | 25–38 mm | dense |
| Beach bag, tote | 38–50 mm | dense |
Double layer
For a stronger, denser handle, two ribbons are sewn on top of each other with two parallel seams along the edges. This makes the handle double-faced; it does not twist and lasts longer. Another option is ribbon sewn onto a cotton or polyester base.
Straps and metal accessories
With straps, the ribbon passes through rings, adjusters and snap hooks. The key is matching the widths:
- measure the inner clear opening of the rings and adjusters;
- choose a ribbon equal to the opening or 1–2 mm narrower;
- check whether a double layer of ribbon passes through the adjuster – a dense ribbon may jam;
- for fastening with a buckle, see buckles in the same width.
A ribbon that is too wide bunches up in the ring, while one that is too narrow slides sideways and wears its edge.
Grosgrain ribbon for bags as binding
Binding along the top edge, the flap and the pockets protects the cut edge from fraying and gives a finished look. On textile bags the ribbon is folded over and sewn with a single seam. Use 20–25 mm for a visible binding of about 10 mm. For multi-layer edges (fabric, lining, padding) choose a wider ribbon and a thicker needle.
Sewing handles – steps
- Cut the ribbon with a hot knife or heat-seal the ends.
- Mark the position of the handle on the inside, usually 3–5 cm below the top edge.
- Position the end of the ribbon and sew a box with a diagonal cross (X) – this spreads the load.
- Use strong polyester thread and a fabric or padding reinforcement on the inside.
- Test it: fill the bag with a load and lift it several times.
Colour and combinations
The classic is ribbon in the colour of the leather details or in a contrasting tone to the canvas. Popular combinations are navy with natural canvas, black with white, burgundy with beige. If the bag is part of a corporate range, the ribbon can be dyed to Pantone and carry the logo.
Branding
A logo printed on the handle is visible every time the bag is carried. Screen printing is the most durable, while hot foil stamping gives a luxurious look on gift bags that are not washed. The logo can repeat along the whole length or be centred if the ribbons are cut to an exact length. Combine it with a woven label or a metal logo plate on the body of the bag.
Common mistakes
- Soft decorative ribbon for the handles of a heavy bag – it sags and twists.
- The ring opening not measured – the ribbon does not pass through or bunches up.
- Only a straight seam for attachment – the handle tears off under load.
- Unsealed ends – they fray the first time the bag is used.
Length of handles and straps
The length determines how the bag is carried. As a guide: short handles for carrying in the hand are about 30–40 cm visible length, shoulder handles about 55–70 cm, and crossbody straps are usually adjustable, because users differ in height. Add an attachment allowance at both ends to the visible length. These values are only a starting point – make a sample and try it with a real load and on people of different heights.
With an adjustable strap, also calculate the extra ribbon that passes through the adjuster and overlaps. If you are planning a range of several styles, standardise the ribbon widths so that you can use the same metal accessories – this simplifies purchasing and reduces stock.
Also think about the ends of the handle that remain visible. If the ribbon is sewn on the outside, the end is heat-sealed and tucked under the seam, and on more luxurious styles it is covered with a leather tab or a metal end cap. That way the handle looks finished and does not fray in use.
Care and wear
Textile bags are often washed, so the ribbon must withstand the same temperature as the canvas and must not bleed. Polyester grosgrain is preferred because it does not shrink. For light bags with dark ribbon, do a colour bleeding test before starting the run.
