Samples – why you should not skip them
Elastic is a component that is hard to judge from a photo or a description. Two elastics of the same width can have very different tension, softness and behaviour after washing. A sample lets you check all of this before you sew hundreds or thousands of products. Sew it into a real product, wear it, wash it and only then approve it.
Lead times and planning
Delivery times depend on whether the item is in stock or made to order, and on the quantity. For made-to-order elastic you need to allow time for a sample, approval and production, so it is best to send the inquiry while the collection is being developed, not just before cutting. If you plan several seasons with the same elastic, discuss a framework order or phased deliveries in advance – this keeps the colour consistent and you do not hold excess stock.
How to compare quotes
When comparing quotes from different suppliers, check more than the price per metre. Compare the width, composition, type of elastic thread, tension, roll length and whether the price includes custom dyeing and samples. Two elastics with the same description “30 mm white” can differ greatly in quality. The surest way is to test the samples side by side in the same product and with the same washing cycle.
Packaging and storage
Wholesale woven elastic is usually delivered on rolls of a set length, packed in cartons. When ordering you can specify the preferred roll length for the machines you work with and whether you need the rolls labelled with article number and colour. Store the rolls in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and radiators, so that they keep their tension.
Common mistakes when ordering wholesale
- giving the width in inches or as “about” – always give exact millimetres;
- choosing on price alone, without a sample and a wash test;
- leaving out the washing cycle – the elastic is selected according to it;
- ordering a colour without a physical fabric sample;
