Sun, Crescent Moon and Geometry – Statement Buttons for Coats

Statement coat buttons are large metal shank buttons with a strong motif – sun, crescent moon, interlocking rings or knot – that turn the fastening into the main decorative element. We offer six such designs from 20 to 37 mm, including MB-12 Sun and MB-11 Crescent Moon, in nickel colour, gold, gunmetal and black gloss.

What a statement button is and why it is in fashion

A statement button is designed to be noticed. Instead of five identical, unremarkable buttons, the coat gets one to three large ones that define its style. Celestial motifs – sun and moon – are among the strongest trends in contemporary jewellery and naturally carry over to buttons. Geometric shapes such as interlocking rings and knots give a more restrained, but equally recognisable accent.

Celestial motifs: sun and crescent moon

MB-12 Sun 34 mm

MB-12 Sun is a classic sun with straight rays. At 34 mm it is large enough for a coat or women's jacket without being heavy. In gold it looks warm and festive, in gunmetal more austere.

MB-17 Sun with Wavy Rays 37 mm

MB-17 Sun with Wavy Rays is the more dramatic version – the rays curve like flames. It works as a single button on a coat, jacket or bag.

MB-11 Crescent Moon 37 mm

MB-11 Crescent Moon is an asymmetric button that works especially well combined with the sun – for example a sun on the front and a crescent moon on the pocket flap. It also suits bags.

Geometry and shapes

MB-20 Interlocking Rings 30 mm

MB-20 Interlocking Rings is a contemporary geometric motif – two interlocking rings. It looks good on coats and jackets with a clean cut and on bags, where it can echo the shape of a metal handle.

MB-23 Braided Knot 22 mm

MB-23 Braided Knot is smaller and can be used as a whole row – on women's jackets, cardigans, knitwear and coats. The knot has a classic feel, close to the Chanel style.

MB-21 Lips 20 and 28 mm

MB-21 Lips is the boldest design – a button shaped like lips. 20 mm suits dresses and jackets, 28 mm bags and single statement use. It is a button for collections with a sense of humour and a pop-art mood.

How to use statement buttons on coats

  • One button – for wrap coats, capes and single-fastening coats. Choose 34–37 mm.
  • Two or three buttons – for single-breasted coats; 30–34 mm is balanced.
  • Double-breasted coat – six 30 mm buttons or a combination: statement buttons at the top, smaller ones below.
  • Repeating the motif – a smaller button in the same colour on the sleeves or pockets (for example MB-23 22 mm) ties the garment together visually.

Statement buttons on jackets, dresses and bags

Although designed mainly for coats, these designs also work on lighter garments. On a women's jacket, a single 34 mm sun button at the waist replaces a belt and emphasises the silhouette. On a dress or shirt, the smaller designs – Lips 20 mm and Braided Knot 22 mm – can be used as a whole row or just on the cuffs. On bags, the large button is combined with a leather or textile loop and acts as both fastener and ornament.

When you use a single statement button, everything around it should be calm: a plain fabric, with no additional metal details in a different colour. If the garment has a zip, buckle or eyelets, choose the button in the same tone.

Technical tips

  1. The buttonhole for a 37 mm button should be about 40 mm, and slightly longer with high relief. If this does not suit the style, use a cord loop or a hidden snap fastener.
  2. Figurative motifs (crescent moon, lips) have a direction – arrange them before sewing.
  3. Large buttons put strain on the fabric: sew with double polyester thread and a backing button on the reverse.
  4. On coats made of thin fabric, reinforce the area with fusible interfacing.

Which colour for a statement button

The sun motif is strongest in gold – that way it looks like real jewellery. The crescent moon and interlocking rings are very good in nickel colour on grey and navy coats. Gunmetal gives all the designs a more restrained, urban look, while black gloss on a black coat turns the statement button into a refined relief detail.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many statement buttons does a coat need?
It depends on the cut. Wrap coats and capes often have one large 34–37 mm button. Single-breasted coats usually have two or three buttons of 30–34 mm. A double-breasted coat needs six, and you can combine statement buttons at the top with smaller, more discreet buttons below or on the sleeves.
Can sun and crescent moon buttons be combined on one garment?
Yes, this is a popular solution. The MB-12 or MB-17 sun is placed on the front as the main fastening, and the MB-11 crescent moon on a pocket flap, collar or belt. Choose the same colour, for example gold or gunmetal, so they look like a set rather than randomly assembled buttons.
Are these buttons suitable for bags?
Yes. Sun, crescent moon, interlocking rings and lips in a larger size look very good on a bag flap, where they work as a decorative fastening with a leather loop. Sew the button through its base with a backing button inside so that the material does not tear with frequent opening.
