A metal buckle with a locking mechanism closes with a clear “locked” feel and does not open by itself when you move or when the strap is under load. It combines the security of a snap fastener with the look of metal – which is why it is chosen for belts, bags, backpacks, dog collars and sports or work gear whenever plastic does not look solid enough. Polkom is a manufacturer of metal accessories and offers two kinds of locking metal buckles: a side release buckle and a lever lock buckle with D-rings. All Polkom metal products are nickel free.

Metal side release buckle
This is the metal version of the familiar snap buckle. It consists of two parts:
- Female part (housing) – a metal housing with an opening at the front and a fixed bar for the strap at the back.
- Male part (tongue with spring arms) – two side prongs that enter the housing and lock, and an adjustable bar through which the strap is threaded and tightened.
When the male part is pushed in, the side arms are compressed, slide through the housing and click into the side windows. To open it, both arms are pressed at the same time from the sides – so the fastener does not release by accident when the strap is pulled lengthwise.

Colours of the metal side release buckle
We offer this model in nickel colour (nickel free), gunmetal, gold and rose gold. Two tones are often combined in one collection – for example gunmetal for the men’s line and rose gold for the women’s, with the same buckle shape.

Lever lock metal buckle with D-rings
The second type is mainly an accessory for bags and leather goods. Both halves end in D-rings to which the straps are sewn or riveted. One half has a hook with a hinged lever: the hook catches the pin of the other half, and the lever is closed to lock the connection. It opens by lifting the lever, so the buckle holds securely even when the strap is pulled hard.
We offer this buckle in dark nickel colour (nickel free). It suits bag and luggage shoulder straps, backpack straps, utility-style belts and pet accessories. More about D-rings is in the article what is a D-ring, and about rings for straps in ring sizes for straps.

Comparison: locking metal buckles and other fasteners
| Type | How it opens | Adjustment | Most often for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal side release buckle | Pressing both side arms | Yes, via the bar of the male part | Belts, backpacks, collars, gear |
| Lever lock metal buckle with D-rings | Lifting the lever | No, the length is set by the strap | Bags, luggage, straps, utility belts |
| Plastic side release buckle | Pressing both side arms | Depends on the model | Sports belts, backpacks, workwear |
| Two-part interlocking buckle | Taking the disc out of the ring | No | Dress and coat belts, elastic belts |
Metal or plastic side release buckle
The mechanism of both types is the same; the difference lies in the material and the feel. A plastic buckle is light, does not feel cold, comes in many colours and suits sports and children’s products – details are in the article plastic side release buckles for belts, bags and workwear. A metal buckle is heavier and more rigid, has a shiny or dark metallic look and gives a belt or bag a more upmarket character. It is the choice when you want the look of a snap fastener in a premium version – for example a women’s belt in rose gold or men’s accessories in gunmetal.

Fitting the strap
- Choose the width – the inner opening of the bars must match the width of the strap or webbing.
- The fixed side – on the side release buckle, the strap is threaded through the bar of the housing, folded and sewn.
- The adjustable side – the strap passes through the bar of the male part without being sewn, so the free end is used for tightening.
- The D-rings – on the lever buckle, the straps are passed through the D-rings and sewn or riveted, depending on the strap material.
- Test – before a production run, check that the seam or rivet does not interfere with the locking.
For strap widths see belt buckle sizes, and for strap adjusters adjusters for shoulder straps and webbing.
When to choose a different buckle
If the belt is decorative and carries no load – for example on a dress or a coat – a two-part metal buckle whose halves slot into each other, with its smooth round front, is often the better fit. For a classic leather belt with holes choose a prong buckle, and for a belt that adjusts without holes, an automatic buckle. A full overview of mechanisms is in the article types of buckles.
Caring for a metal buckle
The mechanism lasts a long time if no sand or dirt gets into it. After outdoor use, wipe the buckle with a dry cloth, and when washing the belt or strap, fasten the buckle and place it in a laundry bag so that it does not hit the drum. Do not use abrasive cleaners on the finish: they can scratch the shiny surface of nickel colour, gold or rose gold.
